I have to get my cut again soon, it's been a while. I was going regularly without any problem but haven't lately and am now officially in an avoidant mode about the whole experience. I can feel the split ends every time I brush my hair, too. Last time I went, the hairdresser spent a lot of time talking with me. Most the time, I am quiet and the hairdresser is, too, and I feel okay with that. I often don't have anything interesting to say about my life and dread answering questions like "what do you do for a living" which is why I would rather them cut my hair as fast as possible so I can leave.
So, now I am mustering up the motivation to return and get these ends trimmed soon.

My sister-in-law does my hair on rare ocasson I need my hair trimmed. She IS a hairdresser.

I haven't been to a hairdresser in about 25 years. I cut my own hair.

What I dread is not just the chit chat but just having to make appropriate facial expressions or even hmms of acknowledgment in such an awkward situation. It just freaks me out. I feel the same way at the dentist but at least at the dentist you aren't expected to be able to talk!

I remember as a kid having to go to a hairdresser once because we were traveling, so my mom couldn't just cut my hair. The workers actually commented on my funny facial expression -- nicely, jokingly, but that's how odd and awkward it is for me. I can't even make the right face!

OMG I *hate* going to the hairdresser for that reason! Sh!t, I'm fine with sitting there and letting her do her job, but I hate being expected to make small talk about nothing. ARRRGGGHHH!! ! I often let my hair grow just because it's such a tiresome experience!

One of my friends experienced "hairdresser chit chat" from a nurse when she was having a smear test. My friend was lying back in the feet together knees apart position, eyes closed, willing it to be over quickly, when a voice from down there said, "So, have you got your holidays booked for this year then?"

I had a very similar experience, only it was while I was getting an ultrasound to look for possible cancer or something almost as horrible. So it was just WEIRD.

None of them have ever actually commented on my weird facial expressions, but I'm sure they have a good laugh about me when I've gone. I never know how I should react when they ask me at the end "so how does that look?" - do I go overboard and say "ohh, oh my god it's amazing, thank you thank you thank you"? I just look really calm and say "yeah that looks a lot better."

I went about 6 years without going to the hairdressers and ended up with my hair almost down to my bum. It was in awful condition with split ends everywhere and it just looked really scruffy and dull. I can't remember what made me go and sort it out really, but having a nice hairstyle makes me feel more confident and couldn't go back to cutting it myself or just letting it grow now.

When I was little, I had hair down to my butt simply because I hated to talk to hairdressers. Now, I say:
"Could you cut it to here please?" and gesture to my shoulders. I then proceed to shut up, close my eyes, and zone out until it's over. I then pay and leave. I still won't cut it more than twice a year though.

I cut my own hair but I am a boy, so it is easier than styled cuts and longer hair. I aim for a very standard, neat cut that doesn't look like a prison / military shave.

I use a Wahl electric hair trimmer fitted with two different combs. I wash my hair and towel it dry because that softens the hair and reduces the mess, because the damp hair doesn't blow around like dry clippings. I first use a number 8 (1 inch) comb to cut all my hair, using lots of strokes from the outside towards the top of my head. Then I use a number 4 (1/2 inch) comb to straighten out the back and cut around my ears. I cut the sideburn and stray bits around the ears with the small trimmer on my shaver. I always wash my hair again afterwards to get rid of the itchy short trimmings.

I go to a Chinese hairdressers [or it may be Thai], Oriental anyway, they are very attentive and don't bother me and so I don't fidget so much, it is inexpensive too, I like to go there, this is good because I would find a mainstream hairdressers too challenging.

Who cares what they think of you? They are there to perform a function... it seems to me to be like caring what the furniture thinks of you.

I like getting haircuts, because when they shampoo your hair they massage your scalp, which feels really nice.

For a while,I get my mother every seasonal period to cut my hair.But I think my haircutting equipment has used its last haircutting capability recently.

They are still human beings, and it's very difficult for most people to think of them as furniture.

This is how I think of it. Who cares what "the help" thinks? They can blather on and on without my answering and if they can't take the hint that I don't give a s**t what Junior Baby Sonofabitch did at school yesterday maybe THEY need the social skills training.

My chiropractor was the same way and I just up front told her to do her job and be quiet.

You should find a polish hair dressers. Usually, they say nothing.

Last time I went to the hairdressers, I again had to get my hair washed, but also there was a student there being shown the ropes. So each stage had to be done twice!! AND she insisted on giving me a head massage as they must always do (complete contrary to relaxing) and when it came to the students turn, she almost burst my brain out of my skull with pressing so hard!!

I think I might grow my hair as long as possible... Or I could learn how to cut my own hair....... Hmm, two crazy options.
