You should tell someone goodbye when you know you're not going to see them ever again and tell them goodbye when you are watching them die.

I have the opposite problem, I get the feeling people expect me to acknowledge them more than I do, and when they greet me casually I rarely know how to respond properly so either end up embarrassing myself (or, at least, getting paranoid about how I may have done so), or say nothing.
