Were you "born without the sports gene"? (poll)
(And I think this refers primarily to team sports, rather than all forms of exercise.)
Before hearing that, I never really knew how to explain to people that I really don't get sports, I don't care about sports, and have no interest in watching sports, and no idea why most people are so into playing and/or watching sports. Now, all I have to do, if it comes up, is joke "Sorry, I was born w/out the sports gene - so I don't exactly follow sports".
I mean really - if you've seen one football game (baseball game, basketball game, etc.) you've seen them all, right? How can people sit there all that time and find it so interesting? And who cares who wins, you know? It's of absolutely no consequence whatsoever.
I'm guessing this has to be a common thing among people on the spectrum.
But then again, maybe sports can be a "special interest" for some of us?
What do you think?
I agree with your view; I honestly do not get how people enjoy watching and playing sports or why they care so much who wins.
Oh, absolutely. Sports have never held any appeal for me. I have severe across-the-board motor skill impairments, as well as significant vestibular and proprioceptive issues which render it impossible for me to have any success at all when it comes to playing sports, and team sports in particular were always torture for me. In gym class, and during athletic activities in summer camp, I used to stand off to the side, praying no one threw the ball my way, just wanting the game to be over.
Watching sports is also boring and tedious. I am generally unable to follow what's going on in the game, and have no motivation to develop an understanding of any of these sports. I've never been able to muster the slightest interest.
I do enjoy swimming, though my swimming technique is awkward and graceless. Otherwise, I have no interest in watching or playing sports. Sports just hold zero appeal for me.
