Some people with AS may have similar features. I'm short with inexpressive eyes.
Some NT's judge people by their intelligence if they look like they have an intellectual disorder. I'm pretty sure that's what this 'derp' thing is about.

(I don't know if I consider myself aspie, but I'm told I'm on the spectrum.)

I've heard of deep set eyes. I have no idea about that but I have that and I've been told I sometimes look stoned. Especially in pictures.

I've heard of something to do with a brow ridge or something? I have that.

I look like a regular person, I think. But I also have a blank face in it's normal state. I get asked if I'm pissed off or am told I'm hard to read. A poker face. That sort of thing.

I think there may be a for some Aspies having a certain look in their eyes, but this may just be my own perception.

I was always told I had very 'gentle' eyes, which is probably more noticeable in a man. I could never see anything in my eyes. I don't even like making contact with myself in a mirror, and I see nothing there. I don't make eye contact with people generally, although I do look at people sometimes when they aren't looking at me, but what little I know of eyes makes me think NT eyes look a little different, and often scarier, IMO.

My theory on why people might see what they call "gentleness" in many Aspies eyes is the difference in mental focus. My feeling is that Aspies are far less likely to be mentally socially "strategizing" in a "dog eat dog" way, less likely to be examining clothing for status and making judgments, less likely to be fighting for a place in a social "pecking order" or mentally looking to elevate themselves or put others down. We're mostly just thinking about our interests or trying hard to comprehend NTs, rather than socially "compete". Does that make sense?

Perhaps NT's can see this lack of this competitive egotistical agenda in some Aspies eyes and see it as "gentleness"?

Just a theory.

I dunno.

Official DX and all here but Ive been more or less descriped as one who wields a piercing, discriminating stare like no other. I do have my "stoner look" moments though.

I used to always get comments about looking stoned, especially in photos. It's a little better now as I devote most of my spent with others smiling until I've gone a bit silly from it. The NT's seem to like it...

I have noticed some of us tend to have a certain look though. For instance, the guy who is sometimes in the autism talk videos on this site (I think his name was Richard or something) bares an overwhelming resemblance to my cousin without actually sharing any physical features. It does have something to do with the eyes, but I think it's the mouth as well.

From seeing other pictures of young white Aspie girls as well as photos of my mother (who definitely has some characteristics, though she is not DX'd) I believe there are certain subtle facial differences - wide set eyes and a wide set nose are the two that stood out to me.

Open to the thoughts of others, whether in agreemetn or disagreement! :)

I think that it would be a really interesting project to collect a large number of full-face photographs of people with Asperger's and autism, and to combine them with morphing software. Some excellent examples of the technology are displayed at http://www.facelab.org/

It is possible to both generate the group average, and to then generate the group caricature by amplifying differences between the group average and population average.

I think that we would possibly identify some interesting, subtle visual features that are common in ASD and would definitely end up with a pleasant "face of autism" poster image that shows that people with ASD look as "normal" as everyone else.

I heard those on the spectrum have 'big eyes' but I'm thinking maybe the thing about the eyes is actually big pupils. I have big pupils.

Interesting.

Optometrists tell me that my pupils are much larger than average, which is why I always need to wait for contacts lenses toi be special ordered.

I think any difference in outward appearance in Aspies would be due entirely to its' symptoms.
For example, I think there's a particular way that a lot of us hold ourselves (awkwardly!), which is only subtly different, and most NTs don't even pick up on it. I also pick up on the nervousness and dithering when another Aspie is trying to maintain appropriate eye contact or hold a conversation. These are all aspects of the way we use our bodies, rather than actual physical differences.

The only cause of a physical difference I can think of would be if we're always awkwardly using a different set of muscles to perform basic functions (standing, walking?). This could produce slight differences in muscle tone.

i find that some Aspies that i have either met or seen in photos have faces that remind me of mine. i'm not talking facial expressions; i mean actual facial structure, but i don't know quite how to describe it. i experience this feeling with both males and females. although, when i see a fellow female Aspie who also happens to have brown hair, the similarity can be particularly striking, like we could almost be related. of course, i have also seen Aspies that do not look like me at all. so i could be imagining everything.

I don't have the derp face - that I know of.

However, I do have sandal toe feet. Big gap between big toe and the next toe.

Anyone else have that here?

people ask me if im OK. aparently i look sad. im usually just off in thought

i have pretty piercing eyes, but as i barely make contact it doesnt bother anyone. my bestie form highschool told me i had freaky eyes, though she is one of the few people i dont feel bad about a bit of extended eye contact with. im pale, circles under my eyes most of the time and really blue eyes

aparently im a little cross eyed too.

I don't think I'm funny looking; a lot of Dunmers have blue skin and red eyes. 8O

But on a note somewhere in reality, I do notice people staring at me like they're trying to figure something out. I don't believe that there is a deformity, it's probably just the clothes, eye contact, etc.

For what it's worth, I recently read a paper examining cranial size in ASDs and while some LFA had some measurable differences, there was nothing substantial in the Aspergers. group. And a smaller than average cranium correlated to severity of autism.
