I was 'outed"
On Babycenter, someone posted a thread "How normal are you?" and people were posting abnormal things about themselves. I posted some about myself and I got a PM from a user there saying "You sound like an aspie" and this user also had it too. Other users in that thread sounded like aspies also because of the things they were listing but it could be traits they have or other things.
I can tell online who has AS but it depends on what they say about themselves in text. If they don't mention their struggles or faults that are part of AS, I won't pick up on it.
I have never been asked a lot of I am autistic or aspie. As a child I got asked if I am ret*d. I hated that so that's why I never ask people if they have something. I don't think lot of kids knew about other disabilities and they only knew of mental retardation so that was the only thing they could think of. Plus if I wasn't ret*d, then I was stupid. You were either smart, stupid or ret*d. If you weren't smart they thought, then you were stupid or ret*d. I can remember this sort of argument when I was eight.
Bully: Beth you're ret*d.
Me: No I'm not.
Bully: Then you are stupid
Me: No I'm not
Bully: Then you are ret*d if you aren't stupid
Me: No I'm not
Bully: You're stupid if you're not ret*d
And ironically these kids liked making fun of me calling me ret*d or stupid. Why? Because I looked like a normal person. Now I don't get asked often anymore if I am ret*d. I think it's because grown ups don't usually ask those things, kids do because they are more honest and don't have a good social filter yet. When grown ups ask it or teens, they are just being rude and hurtful. My parents thought my ex was ret*d but they never asked him it nor asked him if he has other things wrong with him.
I have been recognized by a stranger and by some other man I met from online. He said his mom worked as a special ed teacher so he was always in that classroom visiting her because she worked at his school. So he picked up on all sorts of stuff and even autism. Then he saw me and figured I had some form of it.

Very cool. And they sound like good people. Maybe who see it day to day for years like her tend to get an intuitive grasp; hard to imagine anyone could just by reading professional stuff. The one time I was 'outed' was by a teenage girl who worked at a video store I used to go to. Turned out she had a friend who had Asperger's.
