I went out today and collected about 20 rocks of different sizes. With varying amount of effort, I was able to pick them up and put them down with my toes. So now I have them to practice every day. :)

I also own a pair of Vibram Five Fingers, and I recall that after doing some walking in them on a regular basis, I noticed the muscles seemed to get stronger in my feet. So I should get back to walking in them, even though I'm afraid to get weird looks or comments from people.

Yes, my toes are almost prehensile. I once managed to hold a pencil between my toes and wrote my name.

For you dexterous people, do you mainly use your first two toes as a claw, or do you use all your toes? I am doing the claw thing fairly well. If something is the right size, I can pick it up without using my big toe and maintain a pretty good grip, hold it there awhile, even walk around with it a bit.

This is fun! :D Anyone else wanna train with me?

I often use my feet instead of bending down. Gross, I know. D:

All the time. I do it because it feels really good, and also because I am lazy!

I use all my toes, though, not just my big toe and the one next to it, even for an object as small as a marble. Then I either put the object in my hand, or walk/hop over to where I want to put it. I only use my right foot, though. Heh. I thought I was the only one who did this. :D

LOL!! I love this thread :D

I forgot just how much I used to use my toes for things like turning off computers, flicking low switches, etc. However, since I now have a laptop, it's a bit more difficult (and useless) to use my toes to turn it on and off or to open and lift the screen. Because I hate, hate, hate having my feet feeling bound up, and I can't stand when socks get twisted up on my feet, I'm always barefoot at home. I do pet my cat with my foot when he walks by and wants passing attention, and I use them to pick things like pens or socks up - although, I am a bit hindered by a sprained foot at the moment.

As for strengthening your toes and improving your ability to pick up things with your feet (sounds like a new special interest  ). The rock exercise is a good one (using marbles in therapy atm). Pick them up and put them in a medium size cup to help increase the amount of time you can hold things as well as the control you have. You can switch up the way that you pick them up by trying other toes (just so no other toes get jealous :D ) Another good one is to lay a pillow case down on a smooth surface, then sit in a chair and practice scrunching the entire pillow case toward you with your toes :)

I've given foot massages using my feet instead of hands. Gives new meaning to the word "foot massage"! :)

When I was a kid I also could do easy metal puzzles (like get the ring off the chained horseshoes) using my feet. Today I often pick up laundry with my feet and swing it behind me so that the item swings into my outstretched hand behind my back.

I use my feet to do stuff all the time, both automatically without thinking and manually. I sometimes wish I had some more hands. That would be useful, but since that isn't possible I use my feet instead. I hold stuff with them or use my toes to press, pull, pick up or move objects. My husband finds it amusing and laughs at me and calls me a monkey. He can barely even use his left hand for anything, let alone his feet.

Thanks for the suggestion, quesonrias! I tried the scrunching and I'm pretty good at it. Still doing awesome with the rocks too - I have quite a strong grip! I'll be moving my toes independently in no time! :D

Really? It would be interesting if you could tell me more about that.
