That's happening anyway; Asperger's or not!

As far as being open about it, I make it known when it seems like it should be. That is; whenever I get in a situation where someone is getting annoyed with me for not understanding why they're annoyed, or when I get accused of being weak by letting a noise or something bug me, or most importantly when I get questioned by the police for having shifty eye movements, and they think I'm a rapist or robber, etc.

Now I have an understanding of what's going on, I intend to make it clear to anyone involved with me from the outset.
Why would I want to wind myself up further by trying to hide it? Doesn't make sense to me at all.
Plus, people need to have greater awareness of what it is.

I did not know about Aspergers until I accidently saw a tv show discussing the autism spectrum. I mentioned to a friend that I thought I had Aspergers and he told me he was HFA and I never really knew that about him even after 2 years of friendship. No telling how many people are out there who are autistic and do not know it.

Yep - I "knew" autism was that rain-man thing and very young untrained kids who can draw extremely well - until someone posted a comment on a non-Aspie blog. That came as a bit of a shock because it described me in around four paragraphs. 8O
I had no idea at all of the range of things Asperger's/HFA explained.

Yet hopelessly struggling along anyway.
People need to know.

I tell everyone I probably have AS and performance anxiety. But others actually told me before I told them because I was surrounded by some people that are knowledgeable about both and they noticed the symptoms.

Oh no it is not. With me it is the most un-obvious thing ever.
Eh? Really? Idc anyway. I've nothing to hide from anyone.

I'm pretty open about it. I mean, I don't announce it to everyone I meet, but I don't try to hide it either.

The government could probably find out if they really wanted to...

When I finally enter a relationship, I shall tell my girlfriend of my disorder, or perhaps I could conceal it and simply mimic the behaviour of other conformed teens.

All of my parents friends are aware, albeit their children know. This year at school my class also knew, due to my health teacher, but I seldom tell anybody about it as I desire the ability to conform.

I'm more open about my diagnosis than a lot of people, both because I'm a neuroscientist and because people are going to find me weird from having Asperger's regardless of whether or not I explain it to them. I don't go around advertising it or anything, but whenever Asperger's comes up in conversation, I mention it. There's nothing I can't stand more than hearing people talk about a neuropsych disorder that I actually have and not give my opinion/insight.

I do not try to hide it. I am rather open about having Aspergers.

I used to be really fearful. Now I am out of the closet. It weeds out the prejudiced. My family has known for a long time. None of my friends care. Those classmates that know do not seem to mind. Most other musicians are fine with it. What do they care as long as I can play?

Everyone who knows me more than an acquaintance knows I'm autistic.
Bit hard for me to hide it. But I don't mind. I don't want to be like all those norms.

As for the government knowing...I think I told Julia Gillard I'm autistic. It was during that whole disability reform plan thing.

I told a few people. Though since I'm not diagnosed I don't feel like I'm "authorized" to use that label. Most of them knew nothing about autism and just nodded and probably figure it's something that's like rheumatism or astigmatism. :D Some asked if I take any medication for it.

I have two autistic children so I'm sure lots of other people suspected but didn't say anything. I'm not worried about government involvement. Canadian government isn't too bad. And honestly being autistic myself makes me understand them well. Which is probably rather hard for NT parents.

Selectively open. Most of the time there's just no good reason to talk about it.

Hehe I see what you mean there. 8)

I'm not open about it because I'm embarrassed, it's not obvious anyway and also the reason simonono said.
I'm not totally ashamed, and I'm fine discussing these matters on facebook with people from AS forums. But IRL I tend to keep my mouth shut about it, unless someone I know that knows I have it brings the topic up. With new people that I meet I wouldn't dream of telling them, but if they found out from a different source it wouldn't be the end of the world.
