Why would anyone do that??

It reminds me that at some point in my life I imagined that (why, I don't know) it also made me shudder to think about it. Nambo, have you actually experienced it or saw someone do that, or did you just imagine it like I did.

No, never experienced it or seen somebody do it, you are the first person Ive ever met whose ever also considered the horror of such an act.

Maybe thats why I didnt do so well at school, hyptnotised by the blackboard, and the proximity to the possibility of such an unspeakable event occuring.
"All it takes is for the buck toothed teacher, with a glimmer of miscievous madness in his eye, to slowly turn, extend his upper molars, standing on tiptoe to get a really long drag, head back, and he leans forward, hands supporting his weight against the board, as he bends his knees whilst dragging his teeth, screeching down the abrasive surface and amplified by his mouth cavity.

Arrggh!, Ive just though of another one, once again involving teeth, this time though against a grinding wheel, you know those spinning discs you sharpen chisels on.

Styrofoam squeaking. I shudder just thinking about it.

Ditto. Mainly because I have hearing difficulties to begin with. To me, whispering is just REALLY obnoxious.

Yes, additional vivid memories are coming back; I imagined it with my teacher in an almost identical way. I wonder if it has anything to do with going to the dentist and the horrible experiences one can have if novacaine isn't particularly effective and tactile sensitivity is an issue like it was for me. Lot's of interesting grinding noises and sensations there.

I'm not sure if I thought about the grinding wheel, but the thought of it does envoke a shudder that is worse than the blackboard. The forks and the sandpaper are also bad. I wonder if this is just an AS Spectrum and/or tactile sensitivity thing. I asked my NT wife if she ever thought about these things and she said no, why would I ever think about this. She couldn't imagine how it would feel and it didn't bother her. I wonder if it has something to do with tactile sensitivity that may color some of our perception of the world through sensory imagination as well as actual perception. While the bad imaginations of tactile perception may be enhanced I wonder if the good imaginations of tactile perception are also enhanced in a way that most others do not experience?

As long as I can remember I have been able to at will evoke the sensation of a three dimensional object with no particular form in my left hand that I can also manipulate and change the shape of at will. I have always understood innately that there is nothing really there and it is just a sensation. It must have something to do with tactile sensitivity. Interesting that it only occurs in the left hand. If anyone has ever experienced this or heard of anyone else experiencing something like this please reply, I never thought of a proper way to ask the question; the context of this discussion seems to make it a little less unusual.

Did a survey on this around here at one point - a pile of the Inner circle have the standard blackboard reaction but with difderent frequency ranges.

I am fine with the blackboard, but lower frequencies - somebody filing nails, or using a file on metal, gets me. Wood rasps start to be okay.

My wife goes to higher frequencies - nail file fine, blackboard fine, but cannot stand a metal spoon scraping a pot.

And Number 1 Son takes it just a step further, being bothered by a WOODEN spoon on a pot.

Yes, i did that as a child. I can still feel it though, I spoke in another thread about my ability to give myself backrubs by imagining hands massaging my back.....I DO feel it .
edit: as a young teen i also fell asleep with one hand facing palm up, imagining the feeling of a boyfriend 's hand in mine, thinking that when i would get married, i would fall asleep this way :) it comforted me when i felt sad. My husband and I do fall asleep this way most of the time :) (i forced him to like it hehe)

Fingernails on chalkboards never bothered me. The sound of steel wool on metal, on the other hand, can drive me up the wall.

Re: teeth on a chalkboard

there's a scene in Remo Williams: the Adventure Begins in which the hero uses a guy's diamond decorative mouthware to gut glass.

Plates or glasses clacking against each other. I don't know why, but the sound of it is just as bad as nails on a chalkboard. It's one reason why I hate doing dishes.

My list goes from top hatred to mild:

- really light touch; - it hurts a lot!
- Velvet and carpet touching;
- chalkboard;
- Styrofoam;
- Lemon;
- noses blowing.

And that thing with the teeth on the chalkboard, I actually tried that one! Made me scream and gave me goosebumps.

If you think I'm weird, hey, this is WP. And plus, I love acting scientifically, once I tried trinking a bit of lemon while toucing Styrofoam with one hand and velvet paper with the other. And my wife touching on my forehead!

I'm an atheist, but even though it made me scream really loud: "OHHHHH GOOOOOD, HELP ME!! !! !" LOL! And made me throw up.

Nowadays I'm sticking to my physics lab research instead of trying stupid things at home.

Oh, I forgot to say:

Crispy metalic noises! That one drives me nuts! It feels as if my teeth are going to fall down.

I have this distortion pedal for blues, and there is one point you reach with it, when the guitar strings are brand new, that it gives a very crispy noise, it may eventually kill me one of these days! Kidding.... though it makes me feel that way.
