Can people get help from the government or anything, or anything special in school for having a diagnosis? My mom wants to get me tested, but unless it would be useful I don't want her to waste her money, since I don't need someone to tell me I have it.

I live in Washington State and I am in the process of determining exactly this. I'll probably have more information on Thursday.

If you're anywhere near Olympia: http://www.opendoorautism.com/about.html

Quote:
The Autism Learning Center provides screening to identify red flags that are common characteristics in individuals who demonstrate autism and or asperger, and determine if participation in the social group program is appropriate. The clinic is not licensed to diagnosis autism or asperger, but refers to a local clinical psychologist if an official diagnosis is needed.

I don't know anything about them, I just found the webpage the other day, and then again five minutes ago. I don't know if the psychologist they refer to can take state health care / medicaid / etc.

Also, "what does the Z stand for?"

Thanks for the information. Well, I live closer to Seattle, but I'll tell my mom about this, and maybe we could go there sometime, to see if a professional diagnosis would be worth the money. But I'd love to hear anything you find out about disability help or anything. :)

"Z"? You mean in my location? It's from Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams, a code for the galactic sector that contains Earth.

Also, are you a night owl too?

There's the Care Clinic and the Learn Clinic in Seattle, but they charge... I think they have sliding scales, or at least may have sliding scales.

I am a night owl.

"What does the Z stand for?" is Zaphod's question when he hears the coordinates. I can't find the book to verify it's the precise quote, unfortunately.

Too bad assessments are so very expensive though. What are sliding scales?

I haven't read the book in a long time. I like the books and movie a lot, but I'm not obsessed with either so I don't know very many quotes. My book is about 5 feet away from me though. :D Good to see a HHGttG fan. 8)

I don't know, I haven't tried to contact them. Right now I'm still getting settled into therapy and have only investigated options in the middle of the night when there's no one to call.

Did you know about the BBC miniseries? Pretty good and it covers the Restaurant at the End of the Universe.

I had a tendency to read and reread books over and over again, and the Hitchhiker's Guide series was definitely on that list, at least up to So Long and Thanks for all the Fish...somewhere I have an autographed copy...I hope. That is, I hope it wasn't lost in a move.

Is this what you mean by a sliding scale? That would be good, but it will probably be a few months until I could get one, since we supposedly don't have money right now. My mom thinks that getting a diagnosis could be useful for school, since I have a hard time in it, but I don't think they could do anything helpful for me.

Yeah, I saw part of the first episode, which was surprisingly a lot like the movie ("Have you any idea how much damage that bulldozer would suffer if I just let it roll straight over you?" "How much?" said Arthur. "None at all," said Mr Prosser. ) I should watch it all, and watch the movie again, I love the movie and have seen it many times. I don't usually read non-fiction though, so who knows when I'll read it again. I read really slowly, so it takes me a long time to read a book usually. An autographed copy, that's awesome. My dad has a leather-bound copy of all the books, he's the one that introduced me to it.

Yeah, that's what I mean, although different places have different sliding scales. Some are very accommodating, some less so.

My niece hated the miniseries because Marvin wasn't cute enough.

Money is an object but it won't stop me from what my son needs. He is my life and I'd do anything for him.

I hope this is not too forward, but my 25 year old son is supposed to be tested. I talked to the clinic today and they mentioned insur. which my son doesn't have. They said it is $250 an hr. and it would take them 8 hours! Is this normal pricing? Is being diagnosed worth it? I know he would like to have a professional tell him he has it. Why would this take 8 hours?

I'm waiting for assessment, too. The estimate they gave me is 10 hours at $175 an hour. So the total is pretty close to yours. The 10 hours included the time doctor need to score your tests, analyze it and write reports, so they're not all interviews. This place I'm going to give discounted rates to people with lower income, down to $115/hr for very low income people. It might be worth it to check around to see if they offer that option or any other clinic offer that option?

I sure hope they don't need any childhood records. I have moved to a different country and have been on my own for nearly 20 years. But I do remember everything starting from 3 years old. I hope my own memory is good enough.

Thanks for the reply.
