Yes, smoking stinks and it is horrible for your health. If you don't smoke, please don't start. I would like to look into ways to safely use the chemical in it that works, though. Then maybe I wouldn't keep going back to smoking, and maybe others could quit as well.
I hope the drug companies don't run with this information, and make some expensive prescription meds that no one can afford.

I'm a smoker as well. I've been trying to quit cigarettes but I still smoke a pipe, which isn't quite as bad for my health.

I didnt start smoking until I was 21...never liked being around it and started...just to try it...got hooked instantly!Very scary stuff....I have tried to quit several times useing gum, hypnosis and patches but still crave the ritual of rolling my cigs and inhaling....that hit at the back of the throat, and the smell of my rolling tobacco....goes beyond the nicotine for me....I am actually afraid to quit smoking because I do feel like it helps me cognitivelt(though obviously does nothing to aid my spelling,,,,arghhh)My biggest fear is that I will "go insain" and it seems to be the only thing that supresses a constant internal rage when dealing with humans...I once heard it described like that....sucking in of emotions with each drag ...certainly true for me....I do think I will quit someday if I ever find a better way of dealing with some of my frustration?confussion?Rage?depression?or whatever it is that is making me feel so crappy.

I would certainly like to find a way to boost the acetylcholine level in my brain by natural means. I read that the brain produces a chemical like THC on its own, so maybe this could be done, also.
Maybe through biofeedback techniques? Then we could feel good and get high on our own and the big pharmaceutical (sp.?) companies couldn't cash in.

I don't know if this would help anyone else here, but these two natural supplements have helped me.

For anxiety, Valerian Root helps really well- it is very relaxing and helps relieve stress

Gingko Biloba is amazing for concentration - I keep it at work because that is where I have the most difficult time with concentration and mind drifting.

I don't smoke and I'm afraid to start, it took both my parents about 35 years to give up the habit. I've smoked weed a few times, but it's on such a rare occassion that I'm by no means a "pothead" - I wouldn't really suggest that for helping with the difficulties a lot of people with AS face.

I paid $35 for a female gingko biloba tree a few years ago but a litter of puppies
ate it. The female trees are suppose to smell better than the male trees. I tried
to grow the tree from seeds but they never grew.

I'd rather be Aspie and deal with my Aspieness properly without the use of drugs.

Nicotine is just another drug and it's not a long term solution. As with any drug, you just become more and more dependant on it till your brain fights back and rewires itself to accomodate the drug overload.

Smoking is possibly my second biggest hate on the planet. It's disgusting, and it does so many horrible things to your body and the bodies of people around you. Considering all the diseases/cancers/whatever else it can kickstart - are they really a better option than learning to cope the PROPER way with being an Aspie? Chances are you'll just end up an Aspie with cancer, being forced to encounter stressful situations involving heavy duty treatments, hospital stays and radical and swift changes in your lifestyle and those around you.

Having seen enough of my family die of cancer - some smoking related, I'd have to be the world's biggest moron to take up that habit.

Whatever *tiny* benefit it *may* have to Asperger Syndrome. I don't know about helping mental disorders - having seen the way smokers act when they've not had a cigarette for a while, I'm firmly of the belief that smoking *is* a mental disorder all it's own :P

I think it's probably just down to the fact that it relaxes you.

I'd rather contineu being Aspie without drugs, especially nicotine as it's extremely addictive. I never considered smoking because I saw how addictive the nicotine is by watching my mom try at least 5 times to quit smoking while growing up. I have an aunt who is a heavy smoker, and every Christmas when she sends gifts from Indiana, we have to put everything in the garage to air out. If I get clothes as a gift, I have to wash the item twice to get the stink of tobacco smoke out of it before I can even wear it. Non-clothing items are left in the garage for a week to air out before bringing them inside. Normally my family loves to reuse gift boxes, but with my aunt's addiction, we have to throw her boxes away as the stench is that bad.

Because of the addictive properties of nicotine and the nasty smell, I don't plan on smoking, even if it would help. If you've ever seen someone die from lung cancer or other smoking-related disease, it's not pretty.
