I have a jumble of moderately autistic traits which I have had since I was a small child..emotional/developmental delays...troubles with being a "normal" "functional" adult...etc....I fit the "Aspie" stereotype moreso as a child than I do as an adult. I was told I had a speech delay till I was about 3.
um...I walk on my toes, I am very sensitive to sound, lights, and other people...their voices, the way they move and talk and the noises they make...
I don't drive, I am prone to meltdowns, I can scarcely make eye contact...ever...
I was assessed as having Aspergers at a center for autistic adults and children. I was assessed by another psych as having PDD-NOS...but neither of those count as a formal diagnosis, even though the Asperger's "specialist" told me that I could treat my assessment as a diagnosis...At the time of my assessment, I was not aware I had had a speech delay...so am not sure whether that means I am def. PDD-NOS and not an aspie, or if that means I am HFA...or if both of those are the same thing.
I am under the opinion that plenty of high functioning people with PDD-NOS are in fact Aspies. But mental health care professionals, like anyone else, find themselves out of habit classifying people into categories, when in reality, those categories tend to overlap or if people individually don't have all the symptoms.
