I said "frequently." I think of them as what I want to be doing but can't due to other responsibilities. Like Cornflake, I don't want to get into something unless I can immerse myself in it fully. That requires a completely open schedule and solid time alone, which I don't always feel I have. There are many interruptions, distractions, and so forth which make those interests that much more "special" for how hard they can be to really get around to.

I thought I was the only one.

I've got quite a phobia about getting sucked into a special interest. It's worse when I've got problems at work or some other hassle to fix in "real life.".......as if I need to keep my brain from filling up with special interests and displacing the stuff I need to fix the real-life problems. It can take me some time to move from one "head space" to another, and it's only the things I'm heavily into that I can do at the drop of a hat.

Yes, and "other people" often end up flunking out.

You always are so true and make me laugh at an upsetting situation. YOU ARE AWESOME!

Thank you. :) You are pretty awesome yourself--don't ever forget that.

If I'm NOT spending all of my free time obsessing over my special interests, I get scared. They complete me.

Yes I do get concerned about my special interests. My interests are pretty much all social. I obsess about how people percieve me and trying to come across as normal. This is unhealthy in itself, it causes quite a bit of paranoia. This is basically me having social anxiety, with the aspergers it gets blown in different directions then just a normal SA case.

Im also have people obessions which consume me at times. Thats extremly unhealthy too cause those people will almost never reciprocate. And you always have to hide your obsession about them or else they'll think your crazy. My people obsessions are commonly intertwined with infactuation which happens to NTs too. Except mines are scary consuming obsessions. I try to keep that fact on the DL.

This. When I know I have to do something else, I don't get into my interests.

"Scared" isn't the right word, though.

I just realized that I do this. I haven't actually done any painting in over a year, because I've been busy working and that means I don't have large chunks of time in which to do it. I'm not one of those people who can do a little each day. I have to sit there and work on it either until it's finished or I'm too exhausted to go on. I can't even do this on weekends when I'm working, because weekends are filled with the things I can't manage to do on work days.

Yup, that's the problem here too. Years ago I thought I'd made a breakthrough when I did a bit of tidying and then said "there, that's enough for now." Normally I'd have been lost for days inventing ambitious tidying systems, but that particular time I just had this insight. Unfortunately I didn't learn to repeat the exercise every day, so I still let the mess build up and up and then have a blitz on it.

Never. I love my special intense interests. I love daydreaming about walking down the midways of my invented amusement park with the great old 1920s roller coasters. And I love building the various (HO scale) models for it in my basement. I also immensely enjoy my music.
