Hiking, bird watching, volunteering at the local animal shelter, collecting geological specimens, online geneology (it can be done without paid sites), beta reading for aspiring writers, native plant gardening, starting a local recycling program, volunteering your special interest skills to the boy or girl scouts...

What about cooking? You can learn all kinds of recipes on the internet, and cooking from scratch, unless you use expensive ingredients, is cheaper than buying prepared foods. You could play board games, like Scrabble, or chess, where the initial investment is minimal. And if you like art, I like paper mache, which is nearly free.
