Agreed!

I can't get the darn things to stay in! And when they do - they HURT!

I tried using them against awful noisy partying next-door neighbours, and they were useless. (The earplugs, not the neighbours).

(Well, actually, both).

This is a "world" full of people who do not mind and even like noise. So we have to figure out how to cope and adjust in most situations not the other way around.

There are different sizes and ways to put them in. I had to try them out quite a bit to figure out the right solution. It is also important for me to go out regularly where there is noise and people in order to acclimate a little. It was worth the effort. The deal is that the "majority" of the people roaming this planet like the louder noises and would be uncomfortable in quiet-all-the-time places. It isn't anymore for them to adjust than it is for us IMHO. Etiher way someone is going to be uncomfortable.

If you have access to OC I hear you can actually make sensory processing issues better.

Had the misfortune of shopping at an electronic store over the weekend. Seems like those who love loud sounds blast anything they can, & then leave the area with speakers maxed out at top volume. :-( Had to personally seek out & turn down the offending noises. It's so not cool.

I have to do that too. I really don't understand why people can't be more considerate about that sort of thing. Surely, it's annoying to a lot of people, not just Aspies, isn't it?

The other thing about electronics stores are those alarms that they have connected to merchandise. Some are so sensitive that they go off as soon as you touch anything. The sales people are so tired of resetting them, that they take forever to reset them.

I hate any really high-pitched or really low-pitched sounds. Forgot about the annoying alarms on things like cameras. I despise those too. Might as well drive an ice pick into my ear drum. My hubby was looking for new speakers, & while we were listening to a couple of different brands, these 2 guys (gang-banger types) came into the audio room & wanted to hear a subwoofer. Well, we both bailed out of there, knowing exactly what was coming next. My hubby also hates bass too. It's good that we both have some sound sensitivities, though mine are far worse than his. Anyway, we talked about the speakers, & went back to get them & the sound coming from the audio was just excruciating for me. I left the area, & headed for a quieter location in the store. I guess the sales guy thought he was going to lose the sale because my hubby told me later than when he saw me leaving he bolted to the audio room to turn down the noise.

Love WP, I really feel validated here. :-)

I don't have sensory issues with loud noises for the most part, but still, I understand that a sound can be loud to someone else, even thought it's not loud to me.

I personally can't see ANYONE actually liking the sound of a fire alarm. I don't think we are SUPPOSED to like it. I have seen NT kids cover their ears when the fire alarm goes off.

That's when I tell them I realise its not loud to them but it is to me, simple as that.....I mean its not loud to them so of course they won't percieve it that way.

Those are so useful! I use them all the time. No one can notice them, but they really help.

I work in retail selling electronics. I am one of those people who turn off the alarm when it goes off. I have to get right up next to it in order to do so. As you might guess, I hate having to do that. We are required to use walkie-talkies (two way radios.) I am the only one who complains when certain people yell into the mike, especially when they put the mike too close to their mouths. I even tried to use my walkie-talkie without the earphone (the one the store provides) and was told that everyone has to use the headsets.

I have an ongoing problem with earwax build up which has required (more than once) medical intervention to avoid being almost deaf. Its as if my body is trying to block this source of pain.

Actually, there are 2 sounds that I can't stand. The pile driver going (At 12:00 AM) and the neighbour's dog barking (At 6:30 AM). It's so noisy by my house, it's unbelievable.

High pitch noises, screaming babies, screaming children, fire drills, fire alarms, noisy kids. Are you saying that "NT's" enjoy these things?

I don't think so - but they do seem to have an ability to ignore or cope with those sounds without a meltdown or pain, unlike many of us.

Elsewhere (I've read them) - quite possibly.
Here, with that one statement - debatable.

Either way, I've said what I wanted to say so whatever it is, I'm no longer feeding it.

Sadly, many people are selfish and/or don't care. Selfish in that the don't believe it's bothering us, if it isn't bothering them. If I were a more aggressive type personality, I'd want to punch them for that!

The only luck I've had is using analogies. If I tell someone that I'd like to move to another table, or whatever, to avoid an annoyance, and they say that they can't understand why I'd have to move "just because of that little noise", I offer a parallel with something that bothers THEM. For instance, I have no problem with needles or getting injections, etc. Most people DO have a problem with that to some degree. But I just don't care... They don't hurt, and they don't freak me out. So I tell the other person "Maybe the screaming baby doesn't bother you, but does it bother you when the doctor gives you a shot in the a$$? Well, shots don't bother ME, so why are YOU being a baby, saying they hurt???" That's just one hypothetical example, and sometimes it gets the other person thinking.

I once broke down in te middle of a crowded redemption center at the store i used to work at- I dropped to my knees and covered my ears with my hands. I despised busy times at the store because it would cause me to go into sensory overload regularly, but my supervisor wouldnt be understanding and send me out to do quieter work. She once shouted at me just because i complained about it to another coworker.

On the up side, my auditory sensitivity did present certain advantages: I could actually hear when a machine in our redemption center was about to break down. The sound of wind and running water sound like laughter to me, and I'm sure most NTs cannot appreciate the subtle nuances in music. I listen to instrumental pieces alot, ranging from classical music to background scores from my favorite video games. I love Japanese rock and new age the best.
