Wow, I wish I had new/useful advice for you. I think going to the police (especially with the security tape from the campus police) would probably help a lot, as advised above.

Nope. I was actually getting ready to plug in an external hard drive to do that when he snatched the laptop out of my hands. I had the external in my pocket.

Well, I hope the cops can get the laptop back for you. It's a heads up for all of us, though. People are so brazen these days. I guess they will try to steal a laptop anywhere, even when you are using it so long as you are in public!! ! That is downright scary.
Maybe you can explain the situation to your college professors and they will be understanding if any school work was on the laptop?

I think I would hate people too right now if that had just happened to me. I'm glad you weren't injured.

Not quite but I have a thinly-disguised dislike tempered by the fact that I actually need people to survive. So it can't be as extreme as all that. So consternation, probably.

ok. thank you.

Veradandi: I intend to try, but in all likelyhood, where I live, they wont give a s--t. The report was a formality, honestly.

ooOoOoOAnaOoOoOoo: I doubt that they will actually try, but yeah...I hope so too. And yeah, people don't really seem to care about what they have to do to get what they want. My professors will understand. 3 of 4 were the first people to arrive and try to see what happened.

"I hate People" was a great song by the Anti-Nowhere League.

People suck. It is a well known, time tested fact.

I actually love people. They're all different with their different personalities and tastes. :)

As I am in college as well and live in an apartment complex that can be described as an 'urban children's hotel,' sometimes, yes.

I understand why you would be mad. I would be too. It's unfortunate that there are that sort of people out there. Taking your laptop while you were using it is just amazing. It's hard to see how this could happen. They sounded so organized that they must be doing it regularly. I don't see why the campus cops didn't know more.

The campus cops were awful. I have to work with some people like that. You can't get them to do anything. It's really frustrating at times.

There are good people out there, though. You just have too look a bit harder to find them. I know, it's hard to see that at times.

Good point. I don't really hate people. I just hate being around them - or having them around me. But mostly I don't think they're deliberately mean, just clueless.

So sorry to hear about your experience and laptop, that is just horrible :(

As for the subject heading of the post, reminded me of my mantra to life...

"I hate people, its individuals that I like and love"

People as a whole just suck, and mob mentality as well as how people behave when they think they can/or know they can get away with things they normally wouldn't.

Hope weekend picks up for you, best wishes.

"Hating people" is incredibly hypocritical.
Then again, those with extremely misanthropic world views tend to hate themselves, too...

Take campus security video to real cops.
Campus cops = not cops.
If the bandit is a local troublemaker (likely) the cops may recognize him and there is a small possibility you will actually see your laptop again.
Don't wait days. The faster the better.
If possible, have the real cops come with you to get the video from the pretend campus cops. That should speed up the "finding" of the footage.

Someone else looked through the footage and has gotten a very good image of the man's face. They are checking to see if he is a student and they are trying to use the partial license plate number that we got to find the car. They've got a bunch of the pawn shops watching for him and my laptop.

I appreciate all of the replies. Thank you for allowing me to vent. I apologize if I annoyed anyone in the process.
