I assume he meant mental retardation. That is what ret*d is.

I think as a term it's one that people object to - that is, it's not an objective medical term, but a term often used to attack and bully others, as well as used as a slur to denigrate people (as it was possibly used in the OP).

Am I the only person who doesn't know what videos are being referred to?

Possibly so.

Go to youtube and search for "asperger's" or "autism." Quite a few people have posted about their experiences with ASDs. Some of these people appear perfectly "normal." Many of them come across as odd, in a variety of ways. A few of them have obvious difficulties in communicating. The OP is suggesting that a very large percentage of these people appear to have mental retardation issues, rather than ASDs. Take a look, and make up your own mind.

I don't know, either. The OP wasn't very specific.

Does anyone agree?

Well most people think that talking monotone or slowly is on-par to mental retardation. I had people get on me for this and one ex-boyfriend even treated me as such (and called me ret*d) after we broke up. :(

I think it's really a matter of our perception versus theirs. I get laughed at all the time for the way I talk and I never understand how my talking is so different from theirs but apparently it is because I cant see from their perspective on this.

I blame the general ignorance of the public who still can't differentiate between autism and mental retardation as completely separate and unrelated conditions.

I probably sound like that “mentally challenged” because my speech is very slooooooow sometimes (often in conversations).

I think that sometimes it's difficult not to ask a sensible question in an apparently offensive way, either because you don't realise that your question could be interpreted that way or because there are a limited range of options as to how such a question could be phrased. It's very easy to pounce on a word such as 'ret*d' without considering the rest of what the person said. In this case, I don't think the OP intended his question to come across as offensive, but merely wondered whether there was a link between a video about autism and a particular physical feature he associates with mental retardation. I don't think there is a "better" way he could have asked it, unless he went into exact details as to what that physical feature is such as, "Why do all autistic videos feature people with brown hair?", but that would only be possible if he could define that physical feature, which he might not be able to do.

The point is, these people might not be ret*d at all. It's superficial judgment that renders them so, and it could very well be erroneous. It's better to peer deeper and not be so superficial and shallow in one's observations or errors and inaccuracies are inevitable.

Not all the time.

I don't really call it the "R-Word."
It's just a word.
Like any other word society has denounced and given a bad name (or, in this case, definition) to.

~

But yeah, as far as the OP goes, he's just wanting a reaction. I can't say the other name for that...

He was talking about a particular look which he perceives is common in those who are mentally ret*d, and those in the videos about autism which he has seen. There is no implication in what he has said that everyone who looks like that is mentally ret*d.

And this is something which you don't seem to have done in regards to his post.

Lots of Aspies have speech problems. I think the most common one for Aspies is "sliding" at the end of a word--that is, making the last syllable longer than it should be.

It's difficult to answer the OP's question without seeing exactly what he's referring to. His definition of a retarded-looking person may be different from somebody else's.

i hate that word ret*d. I have had that word thrown at me in the past, presumably because I have had problems communicating with people even though I am far more intelligent than they could ever hope to be.

I do understand what the OP is saying though, as I don't really identify myself with the people in the videos at all. I sometimes sound monotone when I am feeling very depressed or nervous, but not all the time. Most people I tell I have aspergers to say 'I never would have thought that was you' and that is probably because they see such stereotypes of aspergers and think we are all the same.

He typed they seem more mentally ret*d than Asperger's which is really saying he thinks they are mentally ret*d.
So, it seems you haven't given his post in depth study, either.

Yes, okay, having re-read the first post you are correct. However, my point still stands because people in this thread are condemning him for using a 'bad' word instead of looking at what he is actually trying to say.

They understand all-too-well what he is trying to say and it's a bit irking that he's being so shallow about people, saying they look or seem ret*d so they can't have AS. He is generalizing way too much.
