I don't mind a brief "hello, how've you been?" when I meet somebody, but I start looking for an excuse to leave if it doesn't get to something more substantial quite quickly.
That would be the choice for me as well. I'm especially good at small talks with complete strangers. With people I already know I just don't bother. Isn't this weird? I can chat with strangers about anything and have a good time talking. Then just say bye and leave without even asking their names. Unfortunately if you talk to enough strangers they become people you know and it's just not the same again.
