The student is exposed to case studies of Aspergers from which he/she develops a classic prototype for Aspergers that define in their mind what an Aspergers should be. Thus a schema for Aspergers is created in their minds. When they assess teenage or adult HFAs the problem is it challenges their prototype for what they are taught (via DSMIV) are people who are supposed be lower down the spectrum.

I figure therefore people with Aspergers and their families associate having Aspergers with specific traits which collectively become stereotypes. Even WP openly advertises this stereotype bias on their webpage by publishing

WP is an online resource and community for Autism AND Aspergers....thus people wanting to be advocates for autism are perpetuating a false dichotomy based on a few minor traits. With this in mind some of the attitudes of AS people toward HFA and LFA are probably just as ignorant as NTs.

My daughter's case her hyperlexia has been described the same way by her teacher, speech therapist and psychologist. They assume the high reading does not equate to a significant decoding ability. Yet my wife and I suspect her comprehension is actually better than everyone thinks. Maybee another example of the HFA schema proscribing her capacity before it's properly assessed over time.
