It might be a result of which IQ test is being used.

The true number of interest in IQ testing is how many standard deviations a score is from the mean. But because of test construction differences, the actual IQ number may be a bit higher or lower. For instance, Stanford-Binet may have a different standard deviation than the WAIS-R. (My knowledge is rusty, not sure if those are even current names.)
