I'd guess that it relates to my tendency to multi-task. I don't do it when I hyper-focus.

I talk to myself for a couple of reasons.
First of all, to keep myself focused in a distracting environment. So if I am in a crowd and need to talk to Suzi I will sometime mumble inaudibly "talk to Suzi, talk to suzi, talk to suzi..." to make sure I remember what I am supposed to be doing, otherwise I would just kind of freeze and forget to do it.
Another reason is to help words make sense. Like I'll read the test question over again at a whisper, or repeat sentences that someone gave as instructions. I have a very good auditory memory and can usually memorize instructions if read three times, but I don't always understand them until I repeat them back to myself piece by piece.

Singing to myself is something most of my NT friends do as well. I just do it because I have a song in my head or feel like singing. No real reason.

I have to do it when I'm working with numbers, by the time it takes for me to see a number understand it and write it down it's already jumbled. Repeating it out loud helps me focus on it better. I also talk to inanimate objects like they were people, it keeps me engaged in what I'm doing long enough to finish, otherwise I'll think of something else I need to do and start that instead.

I sing cause I love to sing. I sound monotone so I only do it when I'm by myself. Or when I'm drinking I sing Journey like I was Steve Perry himself. 8)

I sing to myself frequently, when alone and when not in a work situation. I tend to only talk to myself when alone, but I do it. If I feel the need when not alone, I do it *extremely* quietly so as not to be heard by others. When I was a young child I used to do it out loud and ppl discouraged that so I learned not to. As to why, it makes me calmer...I dunno why!

i talk to my self and sing, when i am walking down the street it causes me to think i dunno why but it dose and i cover a lot of thoughts some times i find my self talking about something like along the lines of how people would better get along or a project i may be working on or even an idea of a device that could help people out, other times its just gibberish i guess can be called the "gift of toughs" as its just a mess and it don't feel like talking but sounds like it, also sing like that to, or some times humm the song of time or even do this song in opera style but not to loud.

when i do this i keep my voice down and get really quiet when walking past people cause i am not very social and don't like to have others have a reason to think I'm weird.

I do both, and have done so my entire life. I only realized a few years ago that other people do not do this. For me, I think it is verbal stimming.

I mumble to myself, but only when I'm thinking real hard. And when I lose my train of thought I whisper "f**k f**k buggerty s**t s**t" now. (Thanks a lot Colin Firth. ) None of it's intentional.

I talk to myself because... I don't know.

I sing, though, because I absolutely love singing.

I don't do it often, but when I do (both) it's purely because I *want* to.

Talking to myself can be very useful. It can help me speak through my thoughts so they make more sense or even help me when I'm feeling particularly scared at night.

I sing to myself because I feel so much emotion from the song.

I wonder if it's a hyperactive thing too. I am very loud when hyper.

I don't talk to myself. I can "hear" my thoughts in my head without needing to speak them. I don't know why but hearing myself usually makes me uncomfortable. I especially don't sing to myself for the same reason.

I sing and talk to myself when I'm alone....I think it's just out of boredom. Apparently when I was an infant, I "sang" myself to sleep every night

I have a radio going in the background, I don't hum because of that. I just don't like the silence, it's deafening as they say. Without some background noise I will whistle and hum all the time.

Same for me, I think.

I talk to myself and sing a lot. I just sing because it's fun and stimulating.

So far I seem to be the only one who voted "Sing." I also whistle and hum. It helps with boredom and staying calm. I don't talk to myself audibly, but I do think in words. I don't think in pictures like Temple Grandin says she does.
