Whether you like it or not, AS is categorised as a variant of autism, so people using that term are using it correctly. They are "high functioning" as in, for instance, they can live independently, and they have a form of autism, so they are "autistic".
The line between high-functioning autism and AS is largely determined by speech delays, although personally I think the line gets blurred. Where exactly do we draw the line from Autistic Disorder and Asperger's?

I agree with that, because there are differences in the autism spectrum. Yes, everyone is on the spectrum, but there can be quite a difference between someone on the higher end of the scale and the Rainman stereotype.
