I remember when I was obsessed with the vampire anime/manga series Hellsing and Trinity Blood a few years ago, I got angry that vampires were suddenly popular because of Twilight. I thought I was unique for liking series with vampires in them, and I felt "robbed" of that feeling when Twilight became popular. Though actually I shouldn't have been surprised, because if you look at the history of vampires in popular culture, they have experienced fluctuating levels of popularity for many, many years with series such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Lost Boys and Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles books, among many more.

Also, last year I was pretty possessive of my obsession over Johnny Depp. I even went so far as to be mean to other girls who liked him (which I regret immensely) and I almost had a meltdown on Christmas Day when my sister showed me a magazine which made allegations that Johnny was sleeping with a 19 year old. These days I have come to realize that I was being very selfish and immature, and I shouldn't act like Johnny belongs to me. The mature way to be is to celebrate him as an actor and share that love with other people who like him too. That's the way I decided to be, and I am much happier now that I share instead of getting all defensive.

Yes, I know all about that possessiveness about an obsession. When I was younger I could be quite overbearing about it. And yes, it does feel like someone is stealing something from you when the mainstream steps in and suddenly, the thing you were possibly harassessed and teased about is suddenly popular. People jumping on that pop culture bandwagon as it rolls by do NOT share your level of interest. In fact, most people are incapable of imagining the depths of the levels of an obsessive interest. Hence why it is considered a psychiatric disorder.

I've had several obsessions over the years. I talked non-stop about horses when I was growing up, day & night. I talked to anyone who would listen. I knew the different breeds (draft/pleasure riding/wild/etc), breeds with additional gaits, types of riding techniques, types of bits, the different kinds of saddles, etc. I also drew them, watched them on TV, & so forth. Did I care? No. Did I feel like I had to prove it? No. In fact, one of my high school yearbooks, someone wrote "if you don't already have a horse, GET ONE!" That statement made in my yearbook is validation that horses were one of my SIs. My mom hated horses so needless to say, I never had my own, nor would she allow me to take riding lessons. Eventually, my obsession with my favorite four-legged creature subsided once I was in my 20s. I was also deep into Star Trek-TOS & Next Generation-when it debuted, the Electric Light Orchestra (since 1974), Irish music (specifically the traditional kinds of music-an Irishman I knew called it "Tweedle Dee music  ), photography, & Aspergers. I can never ever get enough information on my SIs. I go out of my way to obtain info anywhere I can.

I do not feel the need to prove I have a particular SI. Also outside of WP, I don't really discuss my SIs. Normal people just don't want to hear about them. They wouldn't understand anyway. If I run into people who share an interest, that's awesome! I wish it would happen more often because I could compare notes. Sometimes I even learn a new tidbit about a SI...that's a great thing.

No, I don't have to "prove" my obsessions to others because my special interests are way too specific and niche that not many people are going to like the exact same thing I do to the extent that I do. Right now, it is the original Nintendo 64 version of the video game Tsumi to Batsu: Hoshi no Keishousha (Sin and Punishment: Successor of the Earth).

sometimes I feel a need to show people that they might like music but how I am with music is euphoric, so when someone tells me they like Travis I tel lthem "well I love travis"

I don't really know about what you describe, but I did have a discussion with my therapist over what constitutes a special interest. She was trying to tell me my interests were not indicative of AS, and I was saying "Obsessive interests are in the bloody criteria!"

For some reason, she seems to think that ADHD leads to the same kind of intense focus.

And it was completely normal for me to spend ten years primarily obsessed with one single game that hardly anyone else I knew cared about.

that is interesting my boyfriend has moderate ADHD and he does NOT have an absesion! actually though it was a main distinction between AS and ADHD as people with ADHD have trouble focusing where with and obsession you are hyper focused. he like to read aand learn about anything and everying. he LOVES to leanr all sorts of facts, where me I only like to learn about autism/ Autism service dogs and dogs and cats

Hello. How are you doing today?

It's a joke. When someone says "Hello", you usually say "Hello" back.

No, quite the opposite actually. I dislike the thought of being obsessed with something. Whenever I see someone obsessed with something more than me, I let out a sigh of relief and can temporarily convince myself that I might actually be normal, but this lasts for about 2 seconds.

And, while this is off topic,

I know of ADHDers who focus on a particular interest but I don't know that it's any more intense than NTs. I don't know where my therapist comes up with these things.

Ah, interesting. There have been times I was tempted to do some obvious body mods, although not quite to that extent. Mostly tattoos and piercings.

I totally forgot to keep an eye on this. Oops.

Why?

She said hello (I realized she meant "Is anyone going to reply?", but taking it as a greeting seemed to be humor to me.), I jokingly said hello back and continued in a fairly predictable NT way. Since this was a forum for AS and that's an NT way of conversing, that would be "social skills training" humorously making me a "social skills instructor", albeit a 'bad one' as implied by the training. And, I must be a bad one since I'm apparently not effective in teaching my lessons, lol.

Now, what were you thinking when you read that? :) (<----friendly tone indicator)
