diagnosis and regression

aside from feeling better, how many of you have noticed a regression in your overall quality of life post diagnosis?
maxine aston says:
“If someone can get better and recover from Asperger syndrome, then they never had it in the first place. Asperger syndrome is a life-long disorder. The individual can learn strategies, ways of adapting and coping with the situations that living and working with other people present him, but he cannot learn to do something he does not possess the capacity for. No amount of therapy can give him the ability to use insight and naturally empathize with people close to him.”
does anyone here REALLY believe we can't use insight and naturally empathize with people close to us???

"Use insight" seems like a vague way of putting whatever she's trying to say. Of course aspie's can use insight. But what kind of insight?
As for empathy, my impression is empathy itself isn't really the issue. Knowing how to express empathy is an issue for those with Asperger's. And there are issues with connecting with others that interrelate to empathy. But it's not a simple unable to empathize thing.

exactly!
but what about the millions of people being diagnosed who now think they have no empathy and don't bother trying to be nice to people anymore?
Well, I learnt new behaviours such as being empathic and having a much more open mind than most NT's. I got a bit annoying.
But then the stress built up, the anxiety increased, and I regressed. And I'm not sure if I'd be able to get those skills back.
I still am empathic silently to people when I recognise they are in trouble, but other times I just miss it.
