Good thread. Never thought about it until now but i'd like to sound proof my bedroom. I worked as a construction labourer for a couple of years so I saw how they did it. They used these green panels, a bit thicker than the dry walls they put on top of the panels. They called the panels sona board or something. I remember getting green sh** from the boards all over me just from holding them, it wasn't very solid but it was pretty heavy. These things are dead easy to put up but like I say they're messy so you'd need to put a layer of drywall over them. Maybe you could just plaster over the green boards though. Even painting them might do the trick.

please let me know if you find the name for them.

why is it that when i bring this topic up with my mom she starts screaming and yelling and calling the idea insane?

low frequency is the biggest issue by far.

Yup. I was told the way to block LF sound was with lots of weight......a foot or so of sand ought to do it. I like the idea of just digging a hole, which would probably give the required insulation for the floor and "walls," but drainage might be difficult, unless the sewer is lower than your floor.

My cheap alternative is to mask the offending noise by playing a recording of pink noise. It's still noise but I don't find it anything like so invasive as other people's muzak and yelling. Probably because pink noise is more predictable and smooth, it's easier for the brain to screen out.

But the trouble with all these methods is that they trap the Aspie in a confined space. A better solution would be to silence the people who make the noise in the first place. I suppose you could try asking them to knock it off.

they won't. they figure they're in the right, and they don't speak my language. i'm always in a confined space. it's not like i have transportation or money to go anywhere.

and pink noise doesn't block out bass as far as i know. unless you know of some that does???? please advise if you do.

I know they usually won't stop their noise, I was being ironic. Though it's often a good starting point to ask them to turn it down, because when you get the authorities involved, it usually goes down well if you can honestly say that you've tried peaceful negotiation but they didn't want to know.

Actually I had surprisingly good results from just sending an anonymous letter to an offender or two - one was a guy playing reggae much too loud and long, the other was a dog owner.......amazingly, in both cases the noise stopped permanently. The contents of the letters were polite and reasonable, simply highlighting my problem with their noise and asking them to keep it within legal limits.

Our city council has a "Noise Team" which kind of works - they come round with measuring devices and they operate a "3 strikes and we confiscate your gear" policy. But they only do that if the noise is bad enough to annoy the average person....there's no provision for people with hyperhearing.

The confinement issue......I don't have much money for transport or outside entertainment either, but I could at least enjoy my small garden for free, if there wasn't so much noise out there. And I'd like to be able to open my windows when there's a heatwave.

Pink noise should block out the bass....if not, try brown noise, which has even more bass content. Of course you'll need to play it through an amp and speakers that have plenty of undistorted output power in the required frequency range. If the offending noise is really low-frequency (like it is with a lot of this hip-hop stuff coming from car stereo systems), consider getting a subwoofer:

Note that some motorists are already using that technology in their cars 8O ......no wonder they're such a pain in the butt. Personally I can't understand why society hasn't stopped them yet. You can bust a noise polluter who operates from a fixed abode, but the same offender on wheels seems to be untouchable. I've toyed with the idea of reporting them to the people who do mechanical reproduction rights management, as they seem to have the authority to take large amounts of money from anybody playing records in public, and the required draconian mentality to do so.

Lucky for me both my brothers moved out, so it's quiet upstairs now, but I got a wooden door, and it helps, but I can still hear more than I thought I would!

Now you're onto something. They could be traced to their physical address through their license plates, although authorities are very inconsistent with who they allow that information

A long time ago I had 1 problem house whose sounds went directly into my bedroom window, so I retaliated by wiring a PA horn to a radio set on a jazz station, aimed back at the aholes. I flipped it on every morning and cut it at 10 PM every night. Approximately 3 months later all the cars were gone from their driveway and a 'Bank Owned' sign hanging in the yard

For anyone who needs relief in at least 1 room of the house without using a lot of space, especially those who rent or move house a lot: look into movie theater curtains, they have weight sewn into them and do a decent job of blocking without eating up floor space

Good idea. I currently have an old mattress blocking out my bedroom window, and that absorbs human squawking quite well, at a fraction of the cost of double glazing. Consider installing heavy shutters too. It's all about putting as much weight as possible between you and the noisy bastard, with no holes.

After I posted I found a much cheaper alternative to the $500 theater curtains

Noise curtains on Ebay

I would advise being very careful with a completely soundproof room. While sensory deprivation can be helpful it can also be traumatic, people have been known to go insane due to a soundproof environment.

The fix there would be to add desirable sounds inside the room. some good tract s of nature sounds would do the trick. as would some new-age meditation music.

i've considered sound proofing a room in my house but i came to this conclusion... i will never be able to block out 100% of the noise and that will make things worse. i'm not saying it can't be done. i'm saying i can't do it. even the thought of having such a room and still hearing the slightest noises makes me anxious.

Maybe, but the alternative (noise) must surely have a detrimental effect on sanity. Bring it on,. I say.

This.

There are a lot of people who soundproof for one reason or another. Surely you can find some decent floor plans online.
Some involve sound panels, heavier insulation, etc.-- things that are cheaper and don't affect resale value so much.
