My point, which you seem to be missing, is that "global" is a downright crappy way to assess people with autism. If I have skills that vary from far below average to far above average, what good does it do to say that overall, I'm "average," when that doesn't work because none of my skills are actually average!

And able, but at what? I can blow most of the world out of the water with an IQ test, but I am frequently nonverbal. My skills are so at odds with one another that you can't just say I'm HF or LF, able or not. I'm all over the place, as are most people with ASD.

Also, if you're going to post on a public forum, you can't request what people do and don't say. If they're going to blaspheme, you can't tell them not to. You're just got to make people angry at you if you call them out on it and they'll do it more.
Yeah, that's a fantastic point! Except for the blasphemy! If I ignore it then I'm accepting it & people won't know for future not to do it. But about the autism, you're right; high functioning is pretty meaningless. With Down Syndrome or other Learning Disabilities, it's more accuate, because they usually have difficulties accross the board, but with autism there far more specific, so someone could be a genius in one way, but retarted (I hate to use that word) in another. You're right.

In terms of HF or LF, it depends on specific skill areas. Like most people he's probably able in some areas and extremely challenged in others.

I say Austistic Disorder because he reminds me so much of my son and that's his diagnosis. They all blend, with subtle tendencies with distinguish one diagnosis from another. However, that depends on the view of the person doing the diagnosis.

I am eagerly awaiting the new DSM!

As long as you realize that there are a ton of jerks out there who will just do it even more when you ask them not to... well, do whatever you want.

What exactly is the "mystery" of autism? Autism Speaks isn't really speaking about that, huh? I also noticed that Autism Speaks appears to be the only website the program directs its viewers to (though maybe by watching the whole program, we could find more?). I don't know if that's the best way to educate viewers about what autism is. They didn't mention the spectrum, and that autism means more than the textbook definition for diagnosis.

You could "slow" or "dumb" to describe that as well. If you hate to use the word, don't use it.

Off topic...sort of...but what is it about crossing the street that you are unable to do? Just curious.

Haven't thought about this... hmmm. Well, my two "safe places" are my house and my car. My senses are calm when I'm in these places. So, if I'm driving, I can feel my body, I can see lights and hear sounds (and if this starts to get crossed, then I pull over)... but when I'm walking, between the noise of the cars going past and the breeze on my skin and the sun beating down and the smells of the car exhaust... I get mixed up, and I can't process the motion of the cars anymore to know when to cross.

That said, I'm having increasingly more trouble with driving and just about never do it anymore. It's very rare that things are settled enough that I can.
