Every once in a while I give them a dollar but most the time I tell the cashier I already donated. It's so tack they solicit that way.

I always say no as well. We donate regularly to charities we support and know as reliable. We don't donate or buy anything without doing some research first. Just a nice, charitable sounding title doesn't do it for me.

A lot of the time they're major charities and you'll already know enough about them to know whether you want to donate beforehand--which is good because you can't very well tell the cashier to stand there while you go online and do some research. :)

In many cases like the ones above, there's lots of reasons not to trust them.

I used to always donate...moved out of the US and had a pretty nice house (about 400K)...reunited with a childhood friend who was the "vp of a non-profit organization"...he lived in a house worth about 250K more than mine...and I thought "WTH?" Needless to say, never again did I feel bad about not giving.

What do I think of charity? Simple. It's a waste of money. All the money that has gone to the Susan G. Komen Race For The Cure, what of it? 30 years of running and walking, and no cure for cancer. If I wanted a cure for cancer, I would donate money to scientists, not to people who run around and then donate about 20% of that money to scientists.

At least it drew more attention to women's breasts, which is exactly what this world really needed.

Yeah, Save the Ta-Tas! What a brilliant marketing slogan, because that's the best way to cure cancer...through marketing.

I avoided this thread since it was opened because I thought you were going to ask for money. haha

I hate this too. I might not look poor, but I am. I work a casual job, am a fulltime student on a full student loan, and am completely dependent on my parents. The homeless guy who walks back and forth between all the cars during the red lights has more pocket change than I do! When I say I don't have a dollar, I mean it...and I hate getting the guilt trip at every single cash register I go to. When I do happen to have a dollar, I like to keep it because that is rare for me. I too would rather give when I am able to something I choose to donate. If they want to collect money for a certain cause, all they have to do is put something like that big plastic doggy bank by the door, and sure enough, they will get money.

I donated about a dozen dollars to a foundation that offers camp for disabled children via bank transfer sitting at my desk 6 days ago. I checked their home page and filled out an online form. Initially I received a printed letter from them, and I was hesitant for a month before I decided I will give them that modest sum. Usually I throw out letters like that, this was an exception.

Every now and then I give a little money to beggars on the streets or trams or to street musicians in the subway. When homeless people try to "sell" me their own newspaper "Fedél nélkül" (Without shelter), I always say no thanks. I would hate to touch anything that went through their hands... Once I gave them some money and refused to take the newspaper.
