Thanks, MisterJ ! that might be helpful for anybody trying to manufacture a custom item ... also, notice they have specials on, in case anyone is interested -15% off for 'liking' them on facebook... :)

ok, after reading a bit further, this quote may pertain to what Backagain was interested in, his OP.

"They found that weighted blankets did have a therapeutic calming effect on these patients to the degree that traditional restraints often used with these types of patients were no longer needed."

I have a massive aversion to being physically restrained in any way. Even thinking about it makes my skin crawl.

I can't imagine doing it on purpose.

This really makes me want a weighted blanket. But there is no way I would be able to afford one, especially knowing that I'd probably use it a whole lot less than many of you (I tend to turn to my boyfriend and make him hold me tightly).

Do you have a bondage fetish or something?

Yes to the bondage fetish, but it's different, this experience was comforting, not exciting.

Sounds like a response to deep pressure. Temple Grandin built herself a "squeeze box"/"hug machine" (weighted blankets sound a lot easier, though):

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hug_machine

Quote:
Hug machine
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A hug machine, also known as a hug box, a squeeze machine, or a squeeze box, is a deep-pressure device designed to calm hyper-sensitive persons, usually individuals with autism spectrum disorders. The therapeutic, stress-relieving device was invented by Temple Grandin in 1965.

Autism and autism-spectrum disorders have profound effects upon both social interactions and sensitivity to sensory stimulation in persons with such conditions, often making it uncomfortable or impractical for them to turn to other human beings for comfort. Grandin solved this by designing the hug machine so both she and others could turn to it for sensory relief, whenever needed or simply desired.

Some people have certian fetishes BECAUSE they find them comforting. I.e. diaper and adult baby fetishes.

You know, I try really hard to live by the "to each their own", but am so creeped out by being put int he same category as those that like diapers and being an adult baby. Way too weird, wish you hadn't mentioned it.

The idea of the hug machine makes me a little claustrophobic. I don't know exactly how it works, but I'd be terrified of getting stuck in there. I'm sure it's fine, and I just don't know how it's designed well enough to feel comfortable with it. Plus I would have nowhere to store it in my apartment. I like wearing tight/stretchy clothes sometimes for the pressure effect. I really really want a weighted blanket, but they're so expensive.
