I'd prefer the first, actually. I'd have no clue that they actually meant the second, but really, I don't want to know. And I'm so disorganized that I'd assume they just forgot, like I often do. That is, if I actually remembered that they said they'd contact me!

If I said "I'll contact you in the summer" or whatever, there's usually a reason for it e.g. we're planning to get our kids together in the school holidays, or I happen to be busy the next couple of weeks, and I do contact them when stated, unless I've simply forgotten the arrangement. So if someone says something similar to me I expect to hear from them. If I haven't heard when expected I usually figure they've forgotten and contact them. If I keep getting voicemail and they never call me back, or I send email that isn't responded to I tend to get the hint. Now I'm guessing I've been getting it rather later than I should have all these years... :oops:
