Turn the radio down. I don't care if it's a sweet sound.

I don't know if you can alter the poll, but you should add a third option. I am not crazy about music, but it's good for background noise. That might just be me though.

We seem to be rare, but you're not the only one.

However, like others, type of music matters a lot. I hate loud bass, and don't listen to any modern music. However music is pleasant background noise unlike most background noise (as I can't filter out what's background and what's relevant, this matters to me)

Listening to music helps me think. Silence is distracting to me.

I dont like most top 40's...there is something about that nasally whine that most musicians do nowdays and my first reaction is to shut that crap off. I like a clear vocal with a good rhythm...but not rap...I hate rap.
I do like regae and 80's music even some mountain music, and global beat, and underground music.
I am very ecletic in my tastes, but they all have to be a clear crisp sound.
No whining, gutars screaming, spitting and record scratching, growling etc and most top 40's nowdays sing like they never had singing lessons to learn how to sing with their lungs through the mouth, not through the nose. untrained singers, sing through their nose....something about that sound is like nails on a chalkboard.

Also the volume thing is a mystery in my family. My brother has perfect hearing, but he loves to blast his music so loud the car shakes...however I am legally deaf and the first thing I do when he turns on his music is scream and plug my ears.
How is it that does not bother him with perfect hearing, but assaults my ears when I am deaf enough not to hear a dog barking if I am inside and the dog is outside.
I also cant hear most normal conversation clearly enough to understand what is being said without lip reading.

Does anybody else hate music? I think it's redundant, illogical and encourages the worst in society. I'm talking about the popular music that you hear on the radio mostly. I occasionally enjoy classical music, but for the most part I don't want to hear any music at all. When I'm in the car I listen to talk radio or nothing at all. I think that music is just a way for people to turn their brains off. It makes it so they don't have to think about anything(just like most TV programs). Not to mention loud deep noises hurt my ears and high pitched noises "drive me crazy."

To generalise is to be a fool.

If by 'popular', you mean 'recent', then there is a very well known phenomenon called the 'Loudness Wars' - you can look it up. It is the hot topic amongst Audio engineers and producers and record company executives.

It is too technical to explain in a few words, but it might explain why you can enjoy classical music which has a higher dynamic range than contemporary music.

Just a thought.

The OP claimed that every single genre was a waste of time, terrible, unlistenable, illogical, this is called generalising because he made large claim about a huge body of work - most of which he has probably never heard. Generalising is when you make big sweeping claims about something that's actually a lot more varied and inclusive

Like..all men are masculine, all blacks are criminals, OR all music is crap.

And saying someone is generalising is not generalising in itself.

Today's popular music is indeed really stupid. Adults have been saying that about pop music ever since Elvis, but I think it's really true. The dominant rap music has really dumb lyrics and is basically talking over a random bass beat. The lyrics and music aren't even synchronized, like they have been in virtually all music since the beginning of time. Even the rappers of the 90s synchronized the lyrics to the music!

Now that that connection has been severed, virtually any idiot can do rap, so that's what you get, superstar idiots. Kids look at the idiot on stage and think that being an idiot pays, so they don't bother with school. After all, the idiot whose music they listen to only has a 4th grade education, so why should the fan bother?

Gone is the day when musicians studied at elite performing arts high schools and colleges. Now it's all luck of the draw. This guy gets rich and famous while that guy doesn't. Reality TV pushes the idea that any moron can be famous for no reason at all. What has Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian done to earn their fame? Winning American Idol is the ticket to fame. Hell, even LOSING American Idol can be a ticket to fame. It's not necessarily that the music is stupid, but that the selection process is stupid, and favors idiots. It's a symptom of a deeper social rot.

I used to feel the same way. But one thing, and that goes to ALL y'all, "popular" music and "recent" music are NOT the same. All popular music, even, is NOT by idiots or inharmonious. Thing is, music is drastically varied. If you ask a 16 year old spoiled rich girl or some thug selling crack on the corner or some rave kid or what the hell ever else, you'll get generic BS that all sounds the same. It takes time and an open mind to sift through new sounds to find the quality of it.

Lyrics and music not synchronized? I can maybe see it in Lil Wayne. But that's about it haha. Have you heard Kid Cudi? Totally mainstream but it is damn good. What about the Black Keys? New popular blues rock. Daft Punk and Calvin Harris and a few other electro dance musicians put some awesomely simple yet powerful and complicated compositions together. Gnarls Barkley, some amazing hip hop, with powerful lyrics and music... And what of Gorillaz? Have you heard the song Clint Eastwood? Tell me those aren't good lyrics, even for rap.

Just sayin. The current music scene goes much deeper and is far more varied than just "look at that rapper he's dumb ima be dumb too"

My mom thinks that its the autistic sensory problems that if something is loud enough to hear...it is painful. Autism meets hearing loss.
I guess it could be worse...I could have such sensory problems and NOT be deaf.
I guess it works out in a weird way

Oh ok, I see now.
I was wrong.
Maybe next time i will engage my mind before my fingers.
God, I feel such an idiot.
I certainly won't do that again.

Thanks.

It's still very strange though.
I don't doubt your word or your sincerity.

A most strange phenomenon.

Thanks for taking the time to say.
Really appreciated!

hey so we're talking about music eh? ooooh, i can't live with out it! though i just like todays pop rock some and some r&b. i hate jazz, country, classical and opera irritates the heck out of me. i love the lyrics in music you can move to so i can sing AND dance. i'm in a hip hop dance class and i love it! it's in huntington beach..i am very well known in the class for my quick dance moves. anyway, i have to have my ipod and headphones on me at all times no questions asked. its apart of me. sometimes i just want to attach it to me sircigally. i know tjhats weird to say but i hope the near future that will go along with the microchips. hehe anyway i fell weird saying that yet comfy here. i cant do anything with out music . LITERALLY. i think i want to try music in colledge. being 28 i dont know if i can get going quick enough in it. anyway those are MY 2 cents. :)

I love music, but I only love certain music. If I'm in the car with the radio on, I'm constantly changing the channel trying to find something.
