Let's say that this theory actually applies at the individual level, too. If a person pretends or lies too often, then they tend to be ignored/excluded from the group, one person by one. If there's sufficient communication between members of the group, then they can more efficiently alert the group to exclude the pretender. Such seems to be case for trolls, where they tend to receive less responses to newer threads because members eventually catch onto their pretending behavior. This is why the most effective trolls with any sense of longevity need to carefully balance honest and dishonest posts to maintain an optimum ratio to optimize the overall response rate.

That was an eloquent confession...

Another effective method of thwarting trolls is to take them totally seriously and not rise to the bait of getting PO'd and engaging in the juvenile behavior they seem to thrive on. When everyone is rationally discussing what was supposed to be a timebomb, it loses all its fun.

On a sidenote: people who thrive on causing other people stress, anger or pain - that is not an innocuous little case of Oppositional Troll Disorder. These folks deserve our sympathy as well - sociopaths and psychopaths are also equally misunderstood.

I was explaining why dark_lord_2008 was so successful in his illustrious career on here. Accusing misunderstood innocents of being trolls is trollish, you know...

dark_lord was outed almost from his first post. Wait a minute... where did you reference dark_lord in there? Did I miss something? It certainly sounded like you were commenting on first hand experience...

Well, I tend not to explicitly name implied users as that'd be rude, but I guess I had to in this case. Anyway, I just have such a good theory of mind that I was able to think like dark_lord in my explanation.

 ToM. Ever hear the saying 'It takes a thief to catch a thief?' Just like Prof. Moody in HP...

I actually believe that those with AS are uniquely capable of indepth 'ToM' when it is something of interest to them. If an Aspie wanted to be an FBI profiler I think they would be quite gifted in ferreting out all the possible motivations and methods based on facts in evidence. There is more than one method in which someone can reach a conclusion. In other words - you don't need to have acute ToM to put yourself in someone elses shoes...

Exactly.

It takes an NT to understand an NT and I'm pretty sure dark_lord was NT. Whether an NT's specializations are trolling, playing(as in being a player), thieving, nurturing, etc., it doesn't really matter.

I do believe those with AS do actually have ToM abilities that gets better with age (Which is why older aspies are able to pass the Sally-anne test), but the extent they can exercise that in terms of comprehensiveness, sophistication, accuracy and speed will always lag behind NTs.

My daughter is 9 and she passes the SallyAnn test just fine... doesn't make her NT though. By its very definition autism is a specturm - there are countless variables. Yes, most people are capable of learning. That is actually what early intervention is for BUT contrary to popular belief - just because someone has learned and can get along seemingly well, it does not change the fact that they are the owner of a different neurology than most other people. Just because you can act NT doesn't make you NT. While my thoery of ToM is just fine and likely always has been - the sound and smell sensitivites have always and will always suck to the point of impinging on my life. Along with a long list of other 'invisible difference'.

Trolling - no matter who does it is simply a sad cry for attention from someone who clearly doesn't get it in real life. Bad attention is better than no attention at all. I beleive there are trolls both NT and AS lurking here. And I'm not passing judgement on who is or isn't because like I said earlier - I just keep on talking right past their rhetoric anyway. Probably even more so because it becomes a test of wills in a way. And I'm one stubborn girl...
