Ativan is supposed to be one of the best benzodiazepines. It's between Valium and Rohypnol in strenght, i.e. it's a pretty strong one. I've never tested it myself but I've tested Valium (one "privilige" about being an aspie is that you can really get benzodiazepines) and Rohypnol, so I know pretty much what Ativan would be like.

I have to say you're wrong on that one. I've had Valium and Xanax in the past, and Ativan isn't at all like Valium. Benzos have two functions, sedation and anti-anxiety. Valium is high on the sedation scale and low on the anti-anxiety scale. Ativan is the opposite, low on sedation and high on anti-anxiety.

I can't take Valium at all, because it knocks me out, even at a small dose. Ativan doesn't do that to me though.

Damn it! I have to have a serious conversation with my shrink about this.

Thank's for the answers.
So there is today no specific chemical treatment of autism. Will there ever be ? Only improve some symptoms that NT can also have.

You can't cure a state of mind with chemicals.

Autism is neurological, not a problem with hormones or neurotransmitters--so, no, there is no medication that can cure it. They are thinking that gene therapy might do it; but frankly, that scares me. And why not--I'd be scared of anything that messes around with my own private DNA in order to mess around with my own private brain.

All you can do, really, is alleviate other problems that come along with ASDs, and possibly treat some isolated symptoms (there's evidence that some drugs--antipsychotics and tranquilizers--cut down on stimming; but for all I know, they just make you too tired to fidget).

Probably the best "cure" for autism is more of an educational thing--learning, consciously, the things that NTs know subconsciously, training yourself to tolerate various sensory stimuli, and of course finding a way for the nonverbal to communicate with the world.

All you ever get, no matter how much you educate yourself, is to be able to "fake" NT; but then, you don't want to lose your Aspie/Autie skills and talents, either, do you?

I only take a very small dosage of Zocor for cholesterol but nothing for autism.
I was once prescribed Auroix for depression but that only made me a restless at night and I could not sleep a wink.

The only time I took medication was when I had depression. Even then, it was such a bad experience that I refuse to take any psyciatric drugs for my AS. I'd rather use other means of treating any depression or anxiety, such as excercize.
