I twirl, too. When I was little my mum had to cut my fingers out of my hair a couple of times before finally cutting my hair short. I hated that.

Gosh, I'm chewing my hair right now. Yes, I'm often unaware than I've been twirling my hair until I comb it. I notice that my hair is always tangled in the same few spots.

Same here.

YES!! ! I thought I was the only one with this stim. I've figured out that its the sensation of rubbing the smooth underside of the hair that I do it fair. Its definitely a stim. I've done this with smooth surfaces ever since I was a kid. When I shave my head and no longer have enough hair to do it I completely lose the urge to do it and substitute it with other stims. I substituted it with a horrible stim (coughing) so hopefully when my hair gets a bit longer I'll go back to that stim and drop this coughing one. I'm a male so I never have hair long enough to chew but I can't imagine that feeling good. In fact the thought of chewing hair makes me feel sick.

You're definitely not the only one! I was actually wondering if I was the only one, that's why I made this post. It's pretty much a constant for me. My husband had long hair when we first started dating, and I even did it to his hair! Luckily, he didn't mind. :P I never really thought about it as being a stim until recently, but I do it with other things besides hair too. Loose strings on things, tassels, pretty much any kind of fabric or anything like that I can get between my fingers. :)

I miss my little rat tail. :( It only existed for the twirling, and I did it constantly. Got rid of it when I moved to rural Nebraska, trying to blend in. I forgot how nice that was, I should grow it back now that I'm urban again.

Don't. They are out of style. You would need a short mullet to go with it. No, no no.

I had one too when I met my husband. With a Dorothy Hammil hair cut. Still. My concession to the 80's was letting the rat tail grow and at times spiking my hair. Since the Dorothy Hammil wedge haircut is long on top, I had hella liberty spikes before they became popular.

I have long hair now, but I'm considering getting it cut again because long hair on old ladies makes us look older. I'm seriously thinking about the cut that my daughters friends mother has, thats got the rooster thing going on - see the thread "Ever say something just completely stupid" - but I don't know. I'm at the age where I should either get an old lady cut, an old lady cut and perm and do, or put it up on top of my head like the Bible Methodists do.
But I want my Dorothy Hamill wedge cut again. If that is, there are people still working who know how to cut that style in it's original form.

I also used to twirl my hair...amazingly comforting. My parents thought it was annoying though, so I wasn't allowed to do it anymore.

As an adult, I wear my hair shorter. If it were longer though, I would definitely twirl!

It is very smooth yes! I try not to do too much or it would get greasy and need washing more. I was also told not to do it as a child.

Yes, I mainly twirl my hair (sometimes with great vigor) when I'm in an uncomfortable social situation. When I first started reading about AS it was the only stim I could think of. (Now I've discovered others though, xd).

Wow, I used to do that when I was a kid & I totally forgot.

Some of my other stims (including that) were yelled out of me by teachers/friends years ago. I recall doing a lot of leg shaking, for instance.
