Combating Autism Bill Squashed by Rep. Joe Barton of Texas
They never have been before, why would they start now?

Here's what the bill is about, in a nutshell:
In 2005, a combating autism bill was introduced by members of the Senate and House. It would mandate expenditures of $110 million a year for the next five years to advance research, screening and treatment.
It's the screening and treatment that really concerns me. Screening usually means prenatal, and treatment usually means "cure".
I don't want my son "cured" any more than *I* need to be cured of my inane sense of humor.
What we need money for is interventions, accomodations, and teacher and public education!

(collective crys from politicians in washington) "But.. but.. were only good at genocide and war the rest of that we're clueless about!".
Ive considered trying to start up a private school for the "intellectually unique" but while it would make their younger years less traumatic and more educational it would do less to prepare them for dealing with the rest of humanity (irrationally emotional histerical sheeple) after they graduate so its a bit of a double edged sword.

It has long been my humble opinion that curing an aspie of his autism would leave a shell where a very special creature, resembling, but not the same as, a human life had been.
I suggest that the solution to this problem may lie in Aspies all over the world hooking up, and breeding, as much as possible. This has three advantages:
1) We all for once, get laid.
2) We promote the autistic genes, and cure the world of it's singular obsession with mindless, arse-paralysing smalltalk, and chitchat, in favour of those that promote excellence, creativity, and discovery.
3) Did I mention the copious amount of sex we'd all be having? Ah. Just checking...

Here here. I say we just take over one of those small countries in the South Pacific and start flooding the population with thousands of aspies.

Of course then we would eventually have a country of fully autistic people, and while I think a little autism is good eventually our country wouldn't function

I dunno about that.. concentrating the anomolous genome would allow for natural selection to repair the damage dilution has done to the adaptation it stemmed from.
Im of the opinion that low functioning autism and most of the debilitating and more random aspects of the spectrum are the result of errors in the sequence due to it being diluted and the relegation of those with ASD to choosing mates from a pool of genetically damaged or unstable cast offs from the NT gene pool.
I think the low functioning damaged genome would eventually end up filtered out and the adaptation stabalized rather than cropping up as a random hidden trait floating around the NT gene pool without purpose or desirability to reinforce it.

And, now that you mention it, it suddenly makes a lot more sense to me why I've suddenly started hearing a lot of "Autism Awareness" PSA's lately, and some pretty crazy numbers that sound suspicious to me (I think that, the last time I heard, they were saying that one out of every seventy people is autistic???)
It didn't make sense to me before, but it seems obvious to me now that somebody smells a lot of grant money in Autism, and probably the Pharmaceutical industry is also hoping to start marketing all kinds of dope to "treat" 1/70th or more of the population for "autism"... I guess Autism is the new ADHD, Supressed Memory Syndrome, Juvenile Delinquency or whatever... I have a feeling that over the next few years, school officials, psychiatrists, worried parents, and drug companies are going to be handing out all kinds of Autistic and Asperger's diagnoses and drugs to kids who are probably normal, until the diagnosis becomes a joke and they move on to the next "epidemic".
Worse, I expect them to start cramming some sort of expensive new Ritalin-wannabe wonder-drug down our throats to "cure Autism", before finding out about 10 years or so down the road that the junk is causing all kinds of serious problems, but not doing one thing to cure anything.
And that will be the point where the Class-Action Lawsuit attorneys will start crawling out of the woodwork to cut their share of meat from the corpses of real Autistics and Aspies, and mis-diagnosed children, or their devestated families.
I can't believe I didn't see that sooner
Finding any news on the Act has been hard for me. I keep getting "updates" in my email about it from a listserv I'm on. The assumption is that of course, I'd want to purge the world of Autism.

But the updates aren't actually informing of the bill itself, just who is on the bandwagon. I don't know why the Media is ignoring this kind of information.
Why don't you have a look at http://www.autismspeaks.org
The Feds have already increased funding via the Defense Dept (going to war on Autistics, are they?)
A lot of questionable (quackery) aspects to the Combating Autism Act. It needs to be cleaned up or dropped.
Maybe you can get a job with Joe Barton, or perhaps you already have one.

By the way, the lady at Joe Barton's office that answer's the phone is named KIM, so how is the job going?
It would be great if parents knew about their child's autism at a very early age--infancy, if possible. That leaves out kids who regress, but I guess *periodic* screenings could do it. Auties who start being educated how to deal with sensory problems, and how to communicate with NTs, and all that stuff... you start early, they're more likely to get it. Sure, they'll always be autistic, which is cool with me (and probably them), but I'm all for keeping people out of institutions and dead-end lives just because they're different.
But prenatal screenings... that just makes my skin crawl. "Hey, our baby's autistic--let's kill it"? No. Way. For all you know, you might just have killed a child who would later go on to discover a cure for cancer--and let's face it; Auties and Aspies are more likely than NTs to discover said cure, just because we're better at logic and more focused when it comes to special interests. The world NEEDS us! They're just shooting themselves in the foot when they try to get rid of us.
I'm already pro-life when it comes to NT fetuses; but aborting people on the spectrum makes me even more sad. It's prejudice of the worst sort... "It's different! Kill it!" almost like we're spiders or something...

1.5 million kids and families affected by autism - we VOTE
we will see what happens in the next election! That is the great thing about America
politicians are held accountable for their actions
This "piece of crap" BILL WAS for MY SON. My son who struggles daily to do things you and I take for granted. MY son, whom I would give my life for --- So, for those of you who laugh about this, who say off beat comments that my child should be sent away to an island = and just "get rid" of him. God help you people, because you are a sick group. It cost me upwards of $100,000 a year for therapy not covered by insurance! The combating autism Bill was made to help with therapy, but more importantly to find the CAUSE for this. I recommend we line all you uncaring people up === give you a good shot of thimerisol and watch you start head banging and stimming all over..... Shame on you all. When autism hits your family or friends, think back to what you wrote here. What a terrible evil group of mindless self-centered - self- rightous
