I receive a lot of compliments and sometimes i feel ashamed because of that. It's not about arrogance but simply i don't like 'big words' either positive or negative. So i'm glad to hear i'm not the only one

I also prefer objective statements about myself and don't like "big words". I remember once I was complimented excessively and friendlily by an adult before the whole class at 8th grade, I was sweating I could hide anywhere just to escape from the situation... It's hard to me to accept compliment for a work I find far from perfect, like when I substituted for someone playing a fanfare at a school celebration and I got a book for it as a reward while the performance wasn't that great imo.

On the other hand, I like when people acknowledge my abilities and achievements, and over the years I become much more at ease with receiving compliments in general...

When people compliment me, I accept it, simply by saying "Thanks" but sometimes I'm not sure if they mean it because it's people at school who are usually mean to me, so when they compliment me, it usually means they want something from me, or are about to laugh at me behind my back and make snide comments about me. And sometimes I can still hear them. So yes, I do accept, but I'm not always sure if they mean it.

I've been complimented for doing what I realized was a really haphazard job by someone that I knew was being condescending. I guess you really have to look at context to know what's going on. The trouble comes when you can't get enough information that way or when the info seems to conflict.
