Political correctness pisses me off. It means people are too damn sensitive and take things the wrong way and afraid of the truth. I am fine with some political correctness because if there was no such thing, then everyone be jerks and bullies and be talking down to each other and saying mean and nasty things. Too much political correctness is bad just like too much exercise is bad for you and too much food and too much water and too much politeness is bad and so is too much niceness. Too much of anything is bad and so is too little anything.

I will just keep saying ASD and calling it a disability. If it wasn't a disability, then we wouldn't need accommodations or no one with autism be getting social security and none of us would need voc rehab and no special ed since it's not a disability. I refuse to dummy down my language for these sensitive souls.

Really, the use of words is all about context. If someone calls me a ret*d, I get offended, as would many others on the spectrum, I'm sure. But if me and my Aspie best friend are talking and jokingly use the term "ret*d" to describe something, neither of us care.

See, I don't get that. You're using the word in the same context one would to insult autism - low intelligence, stupid, etc. You're not using it in its actual meaning, so you're no better than those people who insult autistics by calling us ret*d.

Not really. If my phone breaks and I call it ret*d, that's hardly the same context. IMO, words themselves don't matter, how they're used is what matters, and they only have power if you give them power.

To be fair, you can use any disability word to describe an issue. Like "That phone is Asperger's" "that phone is so ADHD" "That phone is so Alzheimers" "That's phone is being diabetic" and so on. Now it won't be so offensive since you are using every disability word you can think of and any disease when something breaks or something acts up, etc.

And instead of people saying "that's so gay" only, why not use other words like "That''s so lesbian" 'that's so straight" "That's so bi?"

My phone's almost run out of memory, so "The phone has Alzheimer's" is quite relevant actually :P

You know what pisses me off? people who complain about political correctness. It is usually bullies and bigots who complain about it the most because they can no longer get away with their vile crap.

Yeah it's all because of those damn sensitive souls! They should just take any abuse thrown at them, if they don't it's obviously because they are too damn sensitive and can't handle the truth.

Not really. As I said above, context is the important thing, so telling people they can't use certain words is just stupid and counterproductive. If anything, making certain words taboo only serves to give them more power to offend.

The following is relevant, but please do not listen to it if you're easily offended. You have been warned.

And if you're easily offended but you watched that anyway, I advise you watch this:

I have no problem at all with people using the words "autism spectrum disorder". If they use that in the colleges it is because that is what the diagnostic books call it. The DSM doesn't list it as "Autism spectrum learning". Anyway, I do have an ASD. Autism defines a large part of who I am since I am wired from an autisitic perspective. I have no desire to rid myself from autism. That being said, I DO have a disorder, disability, or whatever other term you want to use there. I am 27, live with my parents, cannot function fully independently (though I do many things on my own), cannot hold a full-time job, and cannot make or sustain friendships and other relationships outside of my immediate family. I have a disorder, and I do need support in school, at home, and in life in general. If people are to diminish ASD by refusing to call it a disorder, then people will no longer look at for what it is: a disorder that should be tolerated and accepted and embraced. If people no longer see it as a disorder, then I and many others who need it, will lose those supports that can be so beneficial.

I didn't really use him to make my point, no. My point was made with the post itself. I simply posted his Right to Offend thing (the only thing of his I've ever watched, FYI) because I find it funny and relevant to the topic at hand.

All complaints about things which aren't politically correct, assuming they're not in a context which is intentionally attacking anyone, should be addressed as Stephen Fry demonstrated in the sketch I posted just now :P

People who complain about political correctness, just want an excuse for being rude.

"What do you mean I can no longer use the n word to describe a black person! what I also can't use the r word to describe a disabled person! It's political correctness gone mad!"

Again, that's offensive context. The words themselves, however, are just words.

My router's being ret*d, it keeps dropping my connection. How is that the same?

But you are still using it to mean something bad, words are not just words actually they have meanings. But you probably think you are being cool and rebellious by using them.
