I have a funny response... I start behaving in a very very childish way, I sing (almost) out loud, pretend I'm ballet dancing or ice skating (never done any of the two in my life) and generally do anything I can to embarass the people I'm with.
This when there is't a lot of people, otherwise I get a little anxious because of too much people.

I get overwhelmed by the enormous selection of similar, but slightly different products at superstores like Walmart, Target, etc.

Seriously, why the h*ll does anyone need 47 different brands/varieties of toothpaste from which to choose?! !!

I go in with sunglasses, cap with a brim (to block the blazing overhead lighting), and iPod + earbuds. I think of it as my "spacesuit" that protects me from the hostile environment. With that and going at off hours I don't find it too bad.

Probably the biggest problem I have is trying to find items that I haven't bought before. I know where the stuff I usually get is located, but scanning row after row of brightly colored labels looking an item is hell (and likely to require many repeated scans).

I hate going to Trader Joe's. They are crowded and no one knows what they are looking for. so they move slowly, back up, turn without any warning or just stand in the way looking lost. The store is not that BIG! This is not denigrating the food. That is wonderful.. It is the customers that are the problem.

I also want to know why people feel they have to bring the ENTIRE family, includding grandparents, aunts and uncles kids nieces and nephews to the Grocery store! Leave the kids home with ONE of the adults. Heck just send ONE adult to the store with a LIST!

I handle most supermarkets just fine. The only store that overloads my senses is any Walmart. Costco is big but doesn't leave me feeling crowded or lost. Same goes for WinCo. Mostly I prefer smaller stores like Bartell's or Fred Meyer.

I work in a supermarket and I would even say that supermarkets are a special interest for me. So I'm fine. I block the people out as best I can and focus on the organization of the goods, I like seeing all my complicated AS "lists" on the shelves

Yes I just about lose it every time I go in that place because it is so crowded and the customers wander around looking like they have no idea what they are doing. I swear it is like they all go "stupid" when they walk in the door. I think it is the way the place is merchandised, it's a little random. Also the employees are too friendly, to the point of being nosy. And they go out of stock on things all the time. That store really annoys me.

I get sensory overload even when listening to my ipod. I find it best to just make myself as distracted as possible on the items in the store. Sometimes I get migraines from the lights or I get really angry, on the verge of a meltdown. I almost did have when when the person I went to the supermarket with disappeared. I really don't know how I'm able to hold it all together.

I used to do that when I went to the supermarket with my mum. I'd get really excited over the toy section.

The only problem I have with super markets is boredom, and avoiding making a fool of my self. I have toppled displays before. For some reason I have to touch everything.

Used to hate crowds and loud noise in supermarkets but then I realize there's an advantage, people are less likely to notice you if there's many distractions around you, so you can relax a bit more. I find walking into a shop with only yourself and the store keeper way more awkward.

I think that one trip to a crowded art museum I had cured my fear of crowds and learned to tune out. I mean, boy that was a crowd, thousands of people in such a small area.

I don't enjoy going into supermarkets but I don't hate them.
I hate the act of food shopping... that does my head in!! I can never seem to think far enough ahead into the week and see whats going to be eaten.
I do tend to turn into a bit of a child in the supermarket. Often pushing the trolley down aisles and then jumping on the back and skiing along! :P It makes it less of a chore!

My mum hates supermarkets with a passion (She's NT but you wouldn't believe it sometimes!) She can completely melt down in a supermarket she gets angry and frustrated. I have to calm her down! More often than not she'll then get home and say something along the lines of "Steph struggled to cope again." which really pees me off. She does that quite often as I'm the one whos fine and she blames it all on me, makes me out to the be the one freaking out and then when I do freak out she goes "look, see I told you. You just can't cope!"
Yes I can't cope with a mother like her!! !! :wall:

So I tend to avoid supermarkets with my mum, but other than that I'm fine in them :)

I prefer supermarkets when I'm on my own, because I'm not waiting round for others and can just get on with my own shopping. I normally have a route I always take around the shop

I forget what I was supposed to buy. May be I ride the shopping trolleys a little.

I tend to ride the shopping carts way too much. It makes my shopping companions embarrassed I think...but it helps me not freak out. :)
