The house I grew up in was robbed three times within a 10 year period. The first time, the crooks went through the back door so afterwards, my step-dad put iron bars across the door and nailed all the windows shut. This meant if we were in a fire, the only way out was the front door since the windows also had bars over them. The second time, they broke the bathroom window, the only one without bars but, apparently, ran away when we came home. My step-dad, then put plywood over it so, now, no more sunlight in the bathroom and no way to even break the glass if we needed to climb out that window.
The third time, the burglars went through the front door on a sunny afternoon that had two deadbolts. Would you believe those fools dismantled both locks, not even breaking them off but dis-assembling them like they were locksmiths. And "supposedly", nobody noticed. Deadbolts are a waste of money nowadays and it's better to just spend the fortune on those ugly security doors made of metal bars then put similar metal bars on your windows.
How ironic that you have to live "behind bars" because the ones that should have metal bars around them won't leave your property alone.

During young and foolish time of life lived in various wild side circumstances and robbery was not uncommon. Being robbed is frustrating and makes you angry. Now I live out in the sticks where virtually everyone has access to firearms so crime rate is low. I know, I know, not practical or advisable for close quarters suburban and urban living but it works out here.
Been mugged a few times, mostly tho while being in circumstances that I knew were dangerous but did it anyway. Like it was stupid to be out alone at night in certain urban neighborhoods, but I did it routinuely so law of averages was to get mugged once in a while.
The last time I got mugged was in Washington DC where I would go drive delivery truck after fall harvest from Thanksgiving thru new Years. The money was good (for me, at least) but I quit after I was robbed at gunpoint by two guys right next to a sidewalk where people were going by. I was driving one of those vans where the pair of doors open out instead of a sliding door. They were both open and I had my back turned adjusting my load when they came up behind me. They had a very clear command, which in retrospect I almost admired for its elegance and brevity.
"You're going to die if you don't give me your money."
The hard eyes behind the .38 revolver just out of my reach looked like I wouldn't be the first man they had seen die. That coupled with the second man just behind him to the side made any thought of resistance Kervorkian, all macho movie fantasies aside. I was screened from passersby so immediately surrendered the money. They told me to lie down on the flloor of the van and not get up for 5 minutes, which I did, except for only about 5 seconds after they shut the doors I got up but they had already vanished.
I finished the season, but have never gone back since, and mostly avoid cities.
All in all, it makes the practice of cutting off fingers and hands of thieves more palatable.

I HATE thieves. These sorry things that are too lazy or cheap to get their own things they want need to be put in their place. I'd love to catch that kind of person in the act. Frontier justice is the only cure.

i live in a trailer park, and none of us really have THAT much anyways..people who like to steal from other people make me f***ing sick..i hope the kids (which it looks like the work of kids) get smallpox or something bad but not life-threatening happens to them..i know it sounds bad, but anyone who steals like (kid or adult) that deserves whatever's coming to them...
anyone else in here ever get broken into or robbed? if so, were you more scared or angry..what were your first thoughts after it happened to you?
Pathetic scum, hopefully they will get caught and made to pay for their crime,or your xbox short circuits on them and starts a fire,I hate thieves just as much as,i have had games nicked, and bikes nicked that were not insured.
Here are some ideas to try if haven't already:
*Get an ultra violet pen (which shows up under a UV light) and write zip code on all new goods,or better yet,use something like tip ex or paint if not going to be selling any of them or not bothered about the look.
*Make a box out of some strong wood and put all valueable small goods in it (eg games consoles) ,chain it shut and chain the box to something.
*Get some lights fitted around the building-the ones that come on when they detect movement, and perhaps fix some inexpensive as possible alarms to all windows, doors etc/anywhere that they could break in through.
I don't really like the locking things away idea as a person should have the basic right of having their goods in their house, but with so many thieves around now,and the better, more expensive technology available (which attracts them),they are not a good mix.
