For me, they have to have wide boxy toes, no high heels--wedge type or flat heels only. They have to be high on top, and adjustable, such as laces, as I have long, wide feet, that are high on top in front of the ankle. Also, no inside back seam behind the heel. Those back seams always chafe me raw, so I avoid them. The foot gear also has to be cushiony inside, as I have bad feet, and they should have rubbery, or gummy, athletic shoe type soles as I have an unsteady gait. Between the cushioning and the athletic type soles, that helps me maintain my balance better, with my unsteady gait. I have always had feet that turn out a little, and now have bad knees, so I need what help I can get in that department.

Before buying foot gear, I take the time to examine the ones on display carefully to eliminate from consideration, those that definitely won't do. That way there are fewer for me to have to try on. By doing that, and by knowing what I want, I reduce the stress of shopping for foot gear.

Many years ago I must have driven a sales girl at an eye glass store crazy, while I tried on many, many different pairs of glasses, to find a pair that fit. I am hard to fit with glasses. I am also particular about color. However, I did make up for it by finding--and buying not one, but TWO pair of glasses. I had them turn one pair into prescription sunglasses, so that added to their profit. The girl was very nice, even though I am sure she was somewhat frazzled by the time I was done. :-D I did try to let her know how pleased I was at finding two pair of glasses that fit, though, and how much I appreciated her help.

Just take your time to check out the display foot gear, and then buy what you like. Don't be a slave to fashion. And remember, we on the spectrum are all:

A Different Drummer

If a man does not keep pace with his companions,
Perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer.
Let him step to the music which he hears,
However measured, or far away.

--Henry David Thoreau

very descrptive, thanks

I didn't go to the picture, but I will answer the general question... I usually either love or hate new shoes. No fear of buying new ones, but I won't until the old ones are starting to wear down. I have one favorite pair of work boots, which I wear about 5 days/week, and I just replaced them with new ones of the exact same model number in December. But also I have many other pairs of boots and shoes, and OF THOSE, I wear different ones when I'm not wearing my work boots. I know within an hour of putting them on, whether they're right or not. I'm fairly lucky in that I seldom get a pair that I don't like. Work boots are my favorite for feel and for many reasons, but I'll wear skater shoes sometimes.

Yes. It's a change; I don't like change.

My mother tends to take the initiative in regards to such. Which is smart of her, as I'll wear through the soles otherwise (and make makeshift repairs too).

I've found a brand of shoes, Ecco, that I find very comfortable. Comfort is very important to me and part of what sold me on the was the sales guy told me that the company uses the same sole mold for every shoe in that size. So I can go into the store or shop online and know the shoes will fit and be comfortable. Ecco makes shoes that are casual and more dressy. They are expensive but my feet get angry if I wear cheap shoes. But with the type of shoes I but they last a really long time. I can wear the same pair every day for a year or more so I figure $100 is justified.

After you wear the shoes for a week or two and you decide you like them go to the store to buy another pair while they still have that particular shoe in stock. That way you don't have to go through so many meltdowns over shoes.

I have a pair of Michael Jackson LA Gear sneakers. They are so worn out and don't fit as good as they used to but I wish I could get another pair (cheaply).

If I had kept them in the box and never worn them they would be worth money now. I got them when I was 15 and still have them now.

They sure are. I've seen people wanting to pay hundreds of dollars for those.

I think I'm going to try mine on now and see how wearable they are. I'm size 8 and a half I think and they are 7 and a half but I got them when I was 15 and I think over the years they stretched but then either my feet grew or they shrunk when I didn't wear them for a while.

I managed to get my feet in them. The left one went in ok but the right one didn't want to at first. Maybe I will end up wearing them again, but probably not when there is snow and ice or for long walks since the bottom is a little slippery and worn down.

Edit: My feet aren't that short and narrow. The resizing of the picture made them look that way.
Edit 2: These shoes are 21 years old.

I HATE it when people (ie, Staff) hang out behind you when you are trying on shoes. Well, people standing behind me make me nervous in general.
As for shoes, I went barefoot for years in the summer. Used to be a true Tar Heel! LOL
I usually wear shoes until they literally fall apart. New ones just bother me something terrible. And anything stiff? Forget it! Needs a lot of give. I barely managed to tolerate my old loafers at church the other day.
I also go barefoot at home as much as possible. I've even adopted Japanese traditions/manners on that issue. Take them off before coming in the house!

Sincerely,
Matthew

I'm always reluctant to buy new shoes because of the fear of them rubbing my feet and causing painful blisters. I know everybody has this worry, but the pain from blisters can be so bad that it makes me walk funny. Then my socks get stuck to the blisters and it's painful to take them off! Normally I put plasters on but sometimes they slip off during the day.

I usually stick to trainers or those really soft boots, but the trouble is I can't wear those when I start work because they make you wear those black shoes what are more liable to rub my feet.

I've basically given up on any kind of shoes that aren't ballet flats (which I love) or flat boots. I have one pair of sneakers that I've had since the beginning of high school. I wear them when I have to have closed-toe shoes.

I'm very picky about my shoes. They have to be wide in the toe, and nice and flat on bottom, so I don't wobble in them. I mostly wear Keds, or other brands similar to Keds, and in the winter I wear tall boots. And I wear flip flops year round.

I am a real pain to go shoe shopping with because I will get 2-3 pair I can't decide between, and just try them on over and over and over and over and over. If I have "love at first sight" with a pair of shoes, I know they will work, but otherwise I just can't make up my mind. And the ones I can't make up my mind about, usually don't work out for me in the long run. I have to just like them instantaneously. One time I found a pair of navy Puma tennis shoes on clearance, the second I saw them I just said "THOSE ARE MINE!" and made a beeline to them. They were one of the best pair of shoes I ever had, until they finally fell apart, and I still grieve over not having them anymore.

I can never find the right pair. There is someth.ing wrong with all of them.

But I love new socks. I could wear a new pair of socks every day and be happy

I can usually find something comfortable but nothing is worse than
having shoes with holes in them when walking in the rain.
(pun intended.. see below)

I really hate wet socks and cold feet.
