When I went to the library, they were excited by the prospect of doing a display for April! :D 8) Now I need to get some ideas for what information to include for the display..... It needs to be concise and to help combat some of the current misinformation people seem to suffer from. (It never occurred to me that I had Asperger's because I thought autistic people hardly spoke and rocked constantly from babyhood...I didn't know that there WAS a high functioning possibility).

Next I need to go to the local newspaper...I think I will see if they can print somethign such as the following, right away: April is Autsim Awareness Month. The Priest River Times is looking for articles, information, and input relating to autism; including Asperger's Syndrome and PDD. If you are autistic or know soemone who is, please call at 888-8888.

Does that sound OK?

Sorry to take so long to get back about this. BRILLIANT!! Thankyou! We have awareness week in May so I thought I might get in contact with my local library too. I have disappointed myself not keeping up with you on this and not helping with ideas for you.

We really do need to get brainstorming on it. If we could come up with a presentation that we could all use in our local libraries that would be great. I think some things that could go in a library display are:

Obviously of course...the best most recent autism/aspie books

A few older books tha the library NEEDS! I think that they should supply the books, but I don't know if they will feel the same way.

Our awareness pamphlet that we are going to create

Some artwork and literature and music samples from ppl on spectrum

Photos of some of us who would volunteer a pic...to put real faces to it.

I like the ideas of bumper stickers too. So I will look into making stickers on the computer. Is there sticker paper sheets available at shops?
These I could offer free, so this would be a personal choice for others to cover that expence if they chose to. Maybe we could design a bumper sticker that is accessable to us the same way the awareness flyer will be for all of us to print out at our choosing.

Any more thoughts?

You should ask msnbc to put an article on their news website and you could say which famous people had autism, and you could say things to the people who only know a little about autism spectrum disorders about things that people with autism face each day. But, try to have a positive approach, because I think that the autistic spectrum has so many positive things about it. I wonder what it would look like if a bunch of non-autistic (neurotypical) people tried putting themselves in our shoes, and maybe get a taste of the autistic side, not following social rules and such.

If I ever get to be a famous artist? I want to make booths and rooms, environments that will simulate what t feels like to be autistic.

The newspaper didn't show any enthusiasm at all. They looked at me like I was <b>nuts</b> and uh-huh-ed me, and said that the bigger paper woudl be a better bet, but that they could maybe find room for a clinical description of autism!! ! (on second thought, no thanks, man...)

The library already ordered two of Donna William's books, and they have a quacky one aboutcuring autism with a special diet...I would like for them to get the Temple Grandin books.

If you go to a high school or college, you could put it into the school newspaper.

huzzah! the article i've been wittering on about (for ever, it feels like) has actually been published in the university student magazine (don't get me on the appalling grammatical error in the headline - which i didn't write - or the way they've left off the contact numbers of the people in college - including me - who are points of contact for AS issues... grrr).

anyway, haven't had much feedback yet, but that which i have had has been very positive. yippee!

interestingly, in my own seminar group, there's me, and two of my students have brothers with AS, one of whom has "suspicions" about one of her kids. and that's out of 18 people, including me.

i could post the article somewhere on here - in the article section, perhaps - if anyone's interested...?

That's great vetivert! What a pest that they did not put the phone numbers in.

It would be great to get to read it.

Hmm, I don't really know how to describe Asperger's to a NT, I mean, in a way that doesn't take like forever to explain. However, Korn's video for the song Thoughtless comes to mind. What do you think?
