I never could trust myself to cut my own hair. The result would be very unpleasant. I go to a salon every 5 or 6 months and get my hair done by a professional instead.

You were obviously not trying to cut it in one of the 12 regulation styles in your aspie handbook were you? If you were, then you would know that aspies can cut our own hair but in only one of 12 styles. The styles are pictured and instructions given on pg 465-489.

Is that a pledge pin on your uniform?????

;-)

Just playing around. Lots of people seem to ask if just about anything is an "aspie thing". I wasn't being sarcastic or mean, just goofing with you.

I have been cutting my own hair since I was 14. I used to keep it long and straight. Over the years I progressively went shorter and shorter and did more intricate layering. Sometimes I would really screw it up, but I could always fix it somehow and make it look okay.

In the last few years though, I have been hacking it off compulsively when I get too stressed. So it stays very short. People still compliment me on it though, so I guess it suits me. I am maxed out on stress right now, and my hair is so short it looks almost like a buzz cut.

From the time I was little, I could never stand for anyone else to mess with my hair. I hated having it brushed, and I hated having it cut. I'd rather do it myself and screw it up, than to have someone else touch my head.

Exactly why I cut my own hair, too.

Me too.

I do have a ritual (I have many). I get my hair professionally cut when I have a job interview - It's like a step back into the world of doing uncomfortable and weird stuff for the sake of who-knows-why-but-its-apparently-important-so-I-have-to-do-it.

In our home (for AS/autism) it does seem to be an Aspie thing. Four out of eight of us have had a go at chopping our own hair with poor results. We are no longer allowed to keep scissors in our rooms! My hair was dyed red and I couldn't be bothered to re-dye it so I chopped all the red out. I looked so stupid! A week later another resident chopped most of his hair off as well. He earned the nickname 'badger' for a while... Now I am just growing it naturally to see how long it gets.

Well I got it fixed by my normal haircutter. She just blended it all in and it looks like a really short wiffle. Like a 1 and a half all over. Good thing I stopped when I did.

I haven't had my hair professionally cut for at least 15 years. The touching, staring eyes, awkward small talk, there are to many things I don't like about it.
Nowadays I'm balding anyway so I just use a trimmer.

When I was a kid, my Dad cut my hair and always did a pretty poor job of it. As I entered my teenage years I realised how ridiculous my hair looked and refused to let him cut it anymore. Within a few years, I went from having the shortest hair in my year group (a bob) to the longest (I could sit on it).
I still have a fear of hairdressers, and there have been times where I've been tempted to just hack it all off myself, but I know that in reality that would just look even worse.

I have the same problem. Head touching is very irritating. Lucky for me there's a barber in the family that can I'm comfortable with.

I use Wahl electric clippers to give myself a number 8 (1") cut all over, followed by a number 4 (1/2") around the back and around the ears. I dampen my hair before the cut, so that the clippings are easy to collect.

I absolutely hate having someone else touch my hair and the back of my neck, especially light touch. I went to hairdressers for one of my brother's wedding and for my wife's sister's wedding - two professional cuts in thirty years.

I didn't cut my hair for decades and then when I got sick I lost all my hair. When it grew back it was different... much stiffer. I went to a local shop to have it cut back, and the whole experience was upsetting. The haircutters massage your head! And she chats you up, and I know I ranted on and on.

I just shave it every six months or so. Not much room to mess it up as long as I'm thorough about it.

I don't go to the salon's any more, partly to save money, partly because I am overweight, so the chairs are uncomfortable, and partly because the edge of the sink really, really hurts my neck when they wash my hair. My step mom, who used to cut her children's hair when they were growing up, gives me a full hair cut once or twice a year. In between times, I will cut the bangs and sides, as needed. After my mother died, I found a set of hair cutting scissors among her things, and decided to keep them for my own use. I am glad I did. I am not a great hair cutter, but I do okay on the bangs and sides. I can't see or reach the back good enough to tackle that area, but that's okay. The full cuts done by my step mom take care of that area.

It's not uneven; it's a style.

I've been cutting my own hair since I was like 10 or 12, maybe younger... Pretty much around the time my mom bought a hair clipper for the house, I started cutting my own hair. I pretty much always get compliments after cutting my hair, so I'm guessing either everyone's just being nice, or I'm good at cutting my own hair.
