Wondering about GI and ASD experiences
Turmeric helped me out a bit. Fish oil, psyllium seed powder, aloe vera juice are other things I tried.
I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis back when I was 14. It is related to Crohn's but it only is restricted to the large intestine. Learning to control your diet can help as some foods can cause a flare up, but sometimes they just happen. I had to have a total proctolectomy because of a flare up that I couldn't get under control. So, I no longer have a colon.
If anyone here has GI issues, please go see a GI doctor and not just a family doctor. And if you think that it is really bad, talk to them about a colonoscopy/upper endoscopy.
I went nearly a year and a half with GI issues and my family doctor kept thinking it was a stomach virus or a parasite or whatever. Went to a children's GI doctor and he performed a colonscopy and found out that I had UC (he described my colon as if someone took a metal wire brush and scraped the inside).
And for the love of all that is good, if your doctor puts you on medication TAKE IT. Because that is what screwed me up and when I had my last flare up none of the medications worked.
Surfman, don't fool yourself: Naturopathy is big business, and it always has been. Those people make more than most mainstream doctors, and the people who sell nutritional supplements are getting pretty rich off that, too. Whether they're independent or associated with a multinational corporation, they're in it for the money, simple as that. So are the drug companies; but at least the drug companies have to go through a rigorous multi-year testing program to ensure that their new drug is safe and effective. When it comes to alternative medicine, the honest ones will sell things they actually believe work; the dishonest ones will sell whatever you'll buy. The problem? You can't tell the difference between the two, and even the honest ones don't have the research to back up their claims most of the time. When they get that research, we call that "mainstream medicine" and the family doctor starts prescribing it.
Being in a business for the money doesn't necessarily mean that someone is unscrupulous. One of the best business strategies is to provide a quality product. So just because a company makes a lot of money, doesn't mean that they are trying to trick you. In the case of drug companies, they are always living with the risk that some new drug will be inadequately tested and will turn out to be dangerous, and their company will go bankrupt. For a drug company, it pays to carefully test a drug before releasing it.
Re. GI health and autism: Remember two things. First, GI problems are extremely common. Like, practically everybody in the world will have them at some time or another, and children are especially susceptible. And second, autistic people who are more sensitive to their own physical condition will benefit more than NT children for the exact same treatment for the exact same common ailment.
Ummm thanks Callista, but I think your the one fooling yourself by promoting toxic medical substances made in Chinese labs...... over organically grown plants used for millennia by healers, thriving in the sun and wind and soil.....
If your look into medical misadventure (Doctors who kill patients with 'medicines') you can easily see which is safer for the patient.
In NZ medical misadventure accounts for a great deal of extra suffering for patients...........................
herbs, vitamin and mineral therapy is safe as houses
not like toxic chemicals in pills that accumulate in organs like your liver and destroy your immunity and/or overall well being
Do you get paid by someone to write here?? Lobbyist representing large multinational companies would give you cash for your words if you wanted to promote them......
I do agree that autism wont go away with anything, and staying healthy is as good as it gets for aspies
I agree that many drug companies couldn't care less about who they're poisoning, as long as they make a profit, but you're kidding yourself if you think that alternative medicine is effective just because it's "natural", or somehow any more trustworthy.
Almost all alternative medicine relies entirely on the placebo effect. Anything which can be proven to be even a little effective is taken on by large companies and turned into drugs. As you say, this stuff has been used for thousands of years, there has been plenty of time for mainstream medicine to figure out what actually works and what doesn't.
Of course, a large part of mainstream medicine is also entirely reliant on the placebo effect, so we're not saying much.
Shamanism takes many forms, but one thing that all of its forms share to at least some degree, is fraud. Doctors succeed in life by appearing to have all the answers, not by actually having them.
Alternative medicine kills patients, too. A lot. Not just isolated cases.
I'm not saying it's bad: I'm saying it needs to be tested. I'm not trusting something based on a bunch of anecdotes.

Im female. Im gluten and lactose intollerant. Really messes with me, I lost a quarter of my body weight before picking up on the gluten + a whole heap of other symptoms. Lactose I can tolerate in very small amounts but will make me feel sick in greater quantities. I also tend to have trouble keeping my energy levels consistently good, though I dont know what that is caused by.
Odd, that is exactly how I describe the pain in my colon, that's how it feels. I have Ulcerative Colitis too. I've had it most of my life. I am female. Stress and anxiety make it worse. I haven't found anything that helps, other than pork loin cooked in a crockpot w/ potatoes and green beans and carrots, and I can't afford to eat that everyday.

I get acid reflux, constipation and believe I have irritable bowel syndrome. Have had it most of my life and have AS. I believe there is a connection between the gut and the brain in people with Autism.

supposably there is this theory that Autism starts in the gut during infanthood. GI problems lead to nutritional defiencies and alters the development of the infant brain, by toddlerhood, the damage is done. Something about our synapses in our brain have a thinner coating than an NT brain. Not only are females with ASD's more likely to have GI problems, males with ASD's are much more likely than NT's
Anyway, I have lactose intolerance, IBS with cycles of constipation and diarrhea, and severe acid reflux since as long as I remember.
I also been diagnosed with PDD-with classic autism traits...I just prefer to say that I have HFA. Pervasive developmental disorder sounds rather d@mning, doesn't it?? Try telling that to an uninformed NT...I get looked at like I just stepped off of spaceship.
As far as herbs and natrual treatments go....they can be dangerous too. Unknown to most people, but long term use of echinasa can lead to auto-immune diseases. Echinasia speeds up the immune system...which is good during a cold or flu, bad when you have a bored immune system...then the immune system starts attacking the body. I known several people get lupus from long term echinasia use, soon as they stopped the echinasia like I told them to, the lupus went away.
Never take any immune enhancing treatments, herbal or pharmacological if you have an auto-immune disease, ever.

I think some people with autism have more food sensitivities. I really don't buy the leaky gut theory and hold to my own view of autism. If it did start in the gut then we should all have the same sort of symptoms instead of having it differ from person to person in different severities.
A problem for me is not eating enough or not eating enough of the right food. When pms hits I've got to avoid the cheese. Sorry for the TMI. I rarely get acid reflux. I got it a lot before so maybe it's because I've been eating healthier.
If I want to have perfect regulation I have to eat healthy, moderately in fiber. High in fiber can just make things worse. I can't overdo the dairy. I have to eat three decent sized meals a day and some healthy snacks. I always go for fruit or even biscuits because ANZAC biscuits have something like 9 grams of fiber in three. I need to have a lot of water and exercise.
I don't think I'm a celiac or have any intolerances. Wheat makes me hyper and I noticed when I went off the GFCF diet I got more itchy from it. But I stick to white bread for a bit of an energy kick.
I can't be bothered with a bunch of herbs or even vitamins. The most I do is take fish oil when I need a bigger energy kick and as an alternative to my ADHD medication when I take the weekend off.
