The idea that it isn't bad memory but distraction or focus on other things... I'm thinking I buy that, but to do so requires that I admit to being even more out of touch with my environment than I usually imagine. My first thought was "but I'm not always on my special interest", but truly my brain is usually always somewhere else - even if somewhere else is just concentrating on what it takes to interact appropriately with the NT in front of me.

In the book Take Control Of Asperger's Syndrome: The Official Strategy Guide for Teens With Asperger's Syndrome and Nonverbal Learning Disorders the authors suggest that it is not an issue with memory at all - they suggest it is an issue with distraction and focus on other things.

This is one of the main Aspie/ADD traits that applies to me! I always forget to empty the trash, dishwasher, garbages. I even have a note list that I forget to check upon because I am so involved within my musical world.

You seem to have both neurodiverse and neurotypical traits

My short term memory is terrible. I once had meltdowns every day for a week straight, only to realize that I had been forgetting to take my medication for nearly half a month. 8O Another time, I noticed some flowers on the kitchen table and said "Those are pretty. When did we get those?" and my mom was stunned, because they had been sitting there for a week. This incident bothered her enough to tell my psychiatrist about it, and he said that I simply do not remember anything that doesn't interest me (that is, anything outside of my special interests).

That being said, the "Reminder" app on my iPod Touch is a lifesaver. :D
