I still have my collection of Breyer horses.

Adults play with "toys" too - they just don't usually refer to them as toys (and they're often more expensive toys - like kit cars and boats). My mom collects dolls (bleh); but she wouldn't call them toys.

Lots of adults play with toys but do it in a way that is very different from children. Other people will judge your play as either normal or immature depending on how you do it.

Children tend to play on any surface, including the floor, in the car, on the kitchen table. Children also tend to make imitative noises.

Adults tend to play in only a very confined space such as their desktop and play mainly by arranging the toys in a pleasing configuration. They also refer to the toys as their collection and refer to themselves as collectors.

If you care about how you are perceived, keep the dinosaurs neatly arranged in one place and refer to them as a collection. Do not make any dinosaur noises or do anything but pose and rearrange them if other people are around.

If you don't care, then do whatever.

It is perfectly normal for adults to play with toys but with the caveat that adults are expected to do it in a very particular way that is different from children.

My first husband had a large collection of Transformers toys and used to make stop-motion movies with them. That's probably not considered "normal" either but I though it was interesting.

Nothing wrong with that. :) I still have SpongeBob toys, and often make "puppetry" videos with them for YouTube. If it's something that you enjoy, then do it. :)

I don't play with toys anymore (I collect them), but I do still have imaginary friends who I talk to occasionally. Most people would find that very inappropriate for someone of my age (21), so I do it in private and only talk about it with people I trust.

There's nothing wrong with that at all. I'm 37 years old and I still play Nintendo.

On a similar note, no one really grows out of their toys. They just get more complex and expensive. ;)

When I was your age my buddies had "toys", but with higher price tags: motorcycles and sports cars.

The point of such 'toys" had as much to do with attracting young ladies as it had to do with "play".

Would most people think less of you for playing with toy dinosaurs at your age?

Yes. Absolutely.

Is it really 'wrong' in some way?
Or to put that question another way: Do I personally think less of you for playing with toy dinosaurs at your age?

Well..lets just say that if I were in your shoes I would do one of two things:

Either channel that impulse to "play" into some other kind of "toy" ( like maybe a Fender Stratocaster, or two turnables and microphone) that might make you more popular with the ladies.

Or

I would work towards an advanced degree in paleontology so eventually you can get paid to "play with dinosaurs".

My Daleks are fun to play with because they have wheels. It doesn't really matter what other people think. Yeah, it's childish but being like a child is fun. No one should ever lose that part of themselves.

Please. The main reason people stop playing with toys is because of peer pressure and wanting to fit in with their friends when they're at that age right before puberty. I bet if people actually did what they wanted instead of what was "acceptable", grown people would be in Toys R Us buying for themselves as much as for their kids.

Play with your dinosaurs to your heart's content and don't ever let others make you feel bad for doing something that makes you happy.

.....says the one with 180 Beanie Babies, a bucket of little toys, a Hello Kitty lunchbox, and loads of video games.....at age 37 and currently in grad school.

If it's fun, have fun with it.

There will always be someone who judges. It's what they do; it's nothing personal.

I agree that he shouldn't be concerned about how others view it but his question is actually regarding how others view it so telling him that its ok may incorreclty answer his question because I believe that most people will indeed judge him adversely for it.

One thing I've learned throughout life is that people are going to judge us no matter what we do. They will find something, anything, to pick on as a reason to make our lives hell. We might as well do whatever the heck we want and have fun with it anyway. And if anyone gives you flack about it, tell them to frak off and mind their own business.
