It is common for me to be absorbed in a task and forget to eat.

A lot of times I end up having to force myself to eat.......because a lot of times the idea just is not appealing, I'm not worried about weight or anything just don't seem to have an appetite which makes it amazingly difficult to even figure out what to eat.

Not sure if I OBSESSIVELY smell food, but I do tend to always smell something before I put it into my mouth. My best friend always starts laughing and says, BANANA, why are you SMELLING it? Just put it in your mouth!! She gets mad at me when I reject food after having merely sniffed it. She says I just need to try stuff without thinking so much about it, and I will probably find that most food is a lot more tolerable than I convince myself it is.

^ yup. And then not knowing what I want and getting stuck on the DECISION starts to lead to anxiety, and then I eventually just give up on it and go read a book or something.

Sometimes once I start looking at what food options there are, I realize how unappealing everything really is and I decide that I don't want anything after all. (Even if I haven't eaten all day)

Most of the food I eat is cold to slightly warm as I have problems eating things too hot.
I eat only breakfast and an evening meal as my digestive system is somewhat sluggish so I feel full for ever.
I have quite a bad allergy to mustard it makes me very ill and that is annoying as it is hidden in so many shop bought food items so I have to be very careful.

Have always been a picky eater and can definitely relate to this....I will often crave the taste of certain foods and will eat them as often as possible...but the kinds of foods I crave change as I get older. For example, I used to be obsessed with yogurt, but now I rarely eat it.

Yeah that happens a lot too, even if I am actually hungry.

I have some issues with food.

I don't tend to do it with everything now but certainly if it's something new I do(although it's not that often I try new things). When I was a kid my family used to joke about me being like a sniffer dog becuase I would smell things before eating. Actually did I read somewhere on WP about smelling things being a bit of a stim? I used to do it with other things aswell when I was a child.

I think this is one reason why I have a somewhat limited variety of foods I eat. I almost don't need to think about it.
Texture is an issue for me aswell. I hate things like chocolate or banana. Funnily enough I was eating a mint the other day which was very chewy and that seemed a bit similar aswell even though I like the flavour.

I loooove food and eating. I'm a total foodie. I love cooking. I find the actions of preparing food to be therapeutic. I also find the sensation of chewing comforting, as a previous poster related. I find that chewing gum has been effective in controlling some of my social anxiety.

I also have a taste for exotic or "weird" foods, like animal organs and bitter stuff. However I do have a gluten intolerance issue so I tend to avoid most wheat products like bread.

so funny how i originally came on here to understand my (b)friend, and ended up finding out a LOT of stuff about myself...hmmm

Anyhow, to keep on topic. I find food BORING most of the time. I have been known to eat the same thing for days on end. Before i decided to give up pasta (i'm what they call "non" celiac) i pretty much ate it every day. When i was super broke i would make pasta and take it to work for 3 days straight. I've always been like this. My mom said as a kid i used to run out at meal time (we always ate late) and go "play" with my friends. In day-college i would come home, shower, then head straight back out to go have fun. When i got home later (and a little drunk) i would eat my food cold.

when i was a kid i would graze on a bunch of separate "finger" foods, such as a piece of cheese, a tomato, some nuts etc versus a concoction. And only eat certain things (like carrot) raw on a plate next to my dinner plate.
recently i have taken to eating like this again and much prefer it. Of course i live alone, so no-one cares if i'm not eating anything exciting or prepared well. (That said, i have an extremely healthy approach to food and nutrition, always have. Organic, veggies etc).
If someone wants to go out to eat and asks me what i feel like, i hate the pressure. Cos i eat out so rarely, it all seems good to me! Just dont ask me to prepare a meal at home for anyone - way too much like being in the spotlight.

The opposite of this is when there is something i really like. Such as chocolate, or anything sugary. I have been known to eat inappropriate amounts of chocolate in social gatherings (e.g. Easter!) to the point where i will actually hide it.

Whats really funny is the guy i've been *seeing* absolutely loves food, and cooking and taste and flavor. I have almost had a panic attack when he has asked me if i like his cooking. i LOVE it, but am terrified i may have to make some intelligent and thought out response to it. I mean, i can, but some times it takes a massive amount of concentration.

The wine, however, i can appreciate.... ;)

I also have a degree of name and face blindness, and wonder if they are related. Cars too. Don't ask me what color your car is unless i have ridden in it several times.

Oh, and i always smell something new before i eat it, even in a restaurant.
- and i hate breakfast (get morning nausea my whole life)
- don't usually eat at all until 1 or 2pm.
- just tonight drove out of my way to the supermarket and didnt feel like buying anything (the thought of cooking made me feel sick) so came home with cat treats and made some potatoes.

My biggest one is that I don't like my food to touch. Yeah, I know it goes to the same place but I just don't like it touching. No one really seems to get that.

I use to be terrible with then, then one day I decided that the food was going to mix any ways in my stomach and I wasting good food, so I stop caring. It was a simple realization

I love to try new foods though, I am very adventurous when it comes to food. I think you can't know you don't like something unless you try it.

The bad thing is I am a bit over weight, I guess I like food a little too much. :(

I know most NT like their food hot and such, but I am entirely indifferent as to the temperature of my food. Cold food is good, hot food is good. I just don't care what temperature it is at. (Though some foods like ice cream must be cold)

That another thing! Me too!
I don't like extreme hot or cold food and drink (always hated iced water, and I cool down hot coffee with cold water), but i just dont care what temperature my food is. My mother would always say "your food is going cold". It just doesnt matter. Though its embarrassing in a restaurant blowing on stuff to cool it down.

I wonder if my eating small things separate on a plate was due to them touching? Never thought about that.

I don't have a lot of food issues, but I have a few. I'm not a fan of super strong flavors, particularly super-sweet ones. I have trouble eating starchy or gooey foods (baked potatoes, certain types of super-soft bread). I won't touch egg yolks unless they're incorporated into the rest of the egg. I dislike spicy foods. I'm not too fussy when it comes to foods touching each other (though I'm not a huge fan of when runny foods run into something else on a plate), but certain combinations can be a turn-off. The "Bowls" that KFC sells with the chicken, corn, and cheese piled on top of mashed potatoes grosses me out.

Also, being out of milk or cereal first thing in the morning is just about the worst thing ever.

Me too. I tell ppl I have the palette of a pre-schooler. I love potatoes the most. I used to eat some form of spaghettios-type canned pasta every day. I got thru phases where I eat the same food constantly, and the phases tend to repeat themselves.

fragileclover wrote:
Another weird thing is that I can sometimes go 24 hours without eating (even though I love to eat, sometimes I'm too busy to think about it), and feel totally fine, and other days, I can't go more than 3 or 4 hours without getting sick, light-headed and irritable. My sugar levels have been checked probably a dozen times over my life, and they always check out fine. Who knows?

I can relate to this as well. Except the amounts of time are smaller. Sometimes I can go five hours w/o eating, sometimes it is 5 min. And my blood sugar is always normal as well. And I get it tested a lot. As you can probably tell, I eat way too much.

My food issues are mostly texture. Onions, lettuce, raw tomatoes, pineapple, watermelon, celery, coconut. And lots of other fruits or vegetable with a crunch or stringy-ness. I can't stand peanuts, but I love creamy peanut butter.

I can't eat most spices, I tend to like bland food. I don't like food that is too sweet or salty or dry. I also don't like foods with conflicting textures in it. That's probably why I hate most kinds of soup. And I have to have a drink when I eat. Otherwise I get a strong build-up of taste on my tongue. Or I have trouble swallowing, particularly if the food is dry, like crackers.

That's what I eat too! Minus the spaghettis.

I've always eaten rice, pizza, white bread, cheese sandwiches, Mountain Dew. Sometimes add in chips and ice cream. :D

I've read a number of theories about the causes of carbs craving. Depression, diabetes, general lack of energy.

I've had a range of eating 'problems' ranging from EDNOS to bulimia to disordered eating patterns which are non-AS related for the majority of my life, emotional eating and then dieting/overdieting is a common issue altho its better than it was.I've told my mom that I didnt like butter on toast before b/c of my AS when it was b/c of a non-AS related eating problem and I didnt want to eat butter/margarine due to the calories, fat and complex food rules.
