I bathe only once or twice a week, but I will sponge-bathe myself more often than that. It's too time-consuming, and I never managed to fit it into my morning routine. I just make sure I'm not stinky when I go out the door. Why stick to a social norm if I don't need to?

Because you can't smell your own scent unless it becomes really ripe and pungent. Your brain tunes out smells that you are constantly surrounded by, to allow you to better recognize and distinguish new and unusual scents.

Did you ever notice that when you visit friends or relatives, their house smells rather weird when you walk through the door? After you've been there for a while, you don't notice the smell anymore. Just like you don't notice the usual scent of your own place, or the typical scent of your own body. Other people will notice it though, so it's better to be on the safe side in terms of hygiene.

Right; and this is why I have the sponge-bath routine to keep any body odor at bay. But I don't see the need to take a full-blown bath or shower every day because it's what everyone else does.

About a year and a half ago, the New York Times ran a story on people who don't bathe/shower on a daily basis:

I always liked bubble baths when I was growing up. But then I began preferring showers as I got older. I can find the sensory issues of water to be discomforting for me. But I stay clean. Sometimes I wash certain areas one time of the day, and later in the day wash another part or two.

I don't really mind it per se, but if I shower / bathe too often, my (overly sensitive) skin gets very dry and itchy. I also have to be careful about any shampoo and soap I use, because I'm so allergic to the dyes and perfumes they put in that stuff.

I didn't know that or really notice it before now. Thank you for explaining it.

I need a bath once a night it is the only time I can function properly, Thinking back at it I do wonder if its a case of the same temerature and sensation all over. I know it is definitely not because of being clean. I can have showers but they frankly freak me out badly. It is to much sensation

I like feeling clean, and I only ever get that feeling if I am actually clean.

That said, I only shower every other day or so. I don't really do anything to get dirty anyway. I don't really sweat either, which is a plus I suppose.

Time-consuming is the biggest issue I see with showering. It's also a lot of effort as I'm at uni and I'm not exactly a fan of the relative lack of privacy compared to my home, that is being at a big bathroom with separate shower stalls protected by curtains and such. It's a bit awkward too as I'm rather tall and don't want people thinking I look at them in the shower >.<

I do very much like showers, I usually have one every other day or sometimes everyday. I don't find it time consuming, if you do it quick (yet thoroughly) enough it only takes 10 minutes or so.

My body has different temperatures - the water will feel too cold on my head and too hot on my feet. Does anybody have any solutions for this sort of thing?

Baths are alright for me, but I can't stand the feeling of the water in the shower being "sprayed" on me and running down my skin.

It involves taking my clothes off, which I HATE,
getting into hot water, which I HATE,
and then back out, absolutely soaking wet and freezing,
with two + feet of soaking wet thick hair,
after which I'll sit, freezing and trembling and miserable, for the better part of an hour.

If I could stand being filthy, I'd never shower at all.

Buy yourself an enormous bathrobe, very thick, with a hood (or make do with various towels). Cover yourself before you step out of shower. Run back to bed and pull up the covers.

Hope that helps - works for me, although nothing will make the experience pleasant.

That's what I do, essentially- wrap my hair in a towel while I'm still in the shower, and then run across the hall and cannonball into my bed!

Being wet is one of the absolute WORST feelings for me, and I have to endure it so frequently. It's awful. The sensation of water dripping off of you... *shudder* It's abominable. :x And getting my face wet is pure torture. It feels like I can't breathe! This is why I only get showers if there isn't a bathtub available. Also, showers beat your skin with multiple jets of water, and this hurts. But assuming that I don't have to get my face wet, I don't mind being wet while IN the bath. The torture comes when I have to get OUT of the bath. I cannot even describe the misery of feeling water drip off of my hair, having to put on dry clothes that stick to wet skin and hair, and stepping in puddles of water after you've begun to dry off. Feeling water when partially or completely dry just feels like a germy cesspool. And the absolute worst feeling EVER for me, other than intense pain, is becoming wet with CLOTHES on. Oh, that is just vile! Amusement parks/roller coasters have long been a special interest for me, but I NEVER go on water rides. Walking around with wet clothes is just horrible. The way that you feel the water squish with every step you take, the way that you can't escape the wet feeling... It makes me cringe just describing it...
