Has anyone had any experience with weighted blankets?

It is no longer winter where I live, and I had to do the sad thing of taking off my winter sheets and blankets because I get too hot in the Spring/Summer. Unfortunately I do not sleep as well without my 20lbs of blankets over me. I am considering getting a weighted blanket so I still have the heavy feeling but without sweating lots in my sleep.

Does anyone have any advice?

Wait...you mean I'm not the only who needs to be buried under numerous heavy blankets in order to sleep?? 8O

I went to the DreamCatchers site, and discovered that they have "Pressure Pets" too. I have my very own Pressure Pet, a twenty-pound cat who likes to sleep on my torso, and I like to have him there. However, there have to be thick blankets between him and me, because he has claws, and can't be trusted not to dig in with them if something like my rolling over makes him feel unstable when he's asleep. ;^)

That's like me and my dog. He's cat sized and often sleeps on top of me but he has little boney feet that hurt like hell.

I haven't really heard much about these weighted blankets. I like my sheets light and don't like a whole lot over me. I doubt I'd like weighed blankets.

Weighted blankets are awesome -- in the summer, I use a throw sized one so it's not as hot.

A word about the tax deduction comments. In the US, don't assume you can automatically deduct the cost of a blanket even if you have a prescription. You have to itemize deductions first of all (instead of using the standard deduction), and then you can only deduct medical expenses to the extent they exceed 7.5% of your adjusted gross income. So unless you are paying a lot of medical expenses out of pocket and are itemizing, you won't be able to take a deduction.

The IRS has an info page with explanations: http://www.irs.gov/publications/p502/ar02.html.

I never knew about these until now, but they look great! I don't "need" one, but I think I'd really enjoy it. They sure aren't cheap and ideally I'd love to "feel" one before buying it, as it's hard to tell what weight would be best just by looking at it, but that sounds unlikely, so I may have to just take a guess and try it. Any recommended retailers in Australia? I bet these would cost a lot to ship overseas.

Moonhawk, I'm getting mine from here http://www.somna.eu/ These ones are quite expensive as they're the ones provided by the NHS here in Sweden. You can also sometimes find one on Amazon.

For those who live in the UK - http://www.weight2goblankets.co.uk/ Don't think the link posted earlier ships to the UK. You don't pay VAT on this time at all. So there's no need to fill in a form regarding claiming back VAT. You can buy them on Amazon; but they're more expensive and you can't reclaim the VAT.

Never heard of a weighted blanket before. I imagine it would feel good though!

I searched ebay and one listing mentioned it should weigh about 10% of the person's body weight + 1lb. All the ones listed there though are much lighter -- I guess for children.

oceandrop, I think the weight is largely a matter of personal preference. To me, 10% seemed like too little - and I was right. I bought one that weighs 25 lbs (11.3 kg) and I'm about 175-180 lbs (80-82 kg), so that's about 14% and I still wish it was a bit heavier. The problem with this 10% recommendation that you see repeated everywhere is that it doesn't take the area of the blanket into account. They probably mean 10% for a single-size one. Mine is 42x72 inches (107x182 cm) and most of it rests on the bed, not on me. That's why 25 lbs is not as much as it seems. If it was smaller then the weight might be enough, but then it would be very hard to keep it on me as I turn.

My blanket is more than the 10%. I have a 20lb blanket and I am about 110lb. I also double the blanket over so more of the weight is on me if I am very stressed.

I works great. I found the weight I wanted by finding out how much my blankets weighed in the winter when I am most comfortable.

Sorry about thread necromancy but I just got one of these things and I can't stop raving about it. Almost 30 years on this planet and I can finally get a decent night's sleep. Mine was more affordable than the one from DreamCatchers but there are a number of manufacturers making them now. I may also get one for my mom.

If you are looking for a really heavy blanket then go on ebay and look for "x-ray bib" I got 2 full size bibs that weight about 40lbs each and cover my bed nicely for about $120(including shipping). I use both on my bed and it's the best feeling ever.
