I'm intrigued as to how a system of paying first works. Does the fuel stop flowing once you reach the amount you've paid for?

What gas station do you go to? This gives me a devious idea!

On a more serious note, no I've never done this. I pay at the pump though so it'd be impossible...you have to insert your debit card before you can pump gas, and if you don't pump any then you won't be charged anything lol. Perhaps something to consider for the future?

Yes. If I didn't fee like using my debit card I would go inside and hand the cashier a 20 and then put some gas in my vehicle, it might go a cent or 2 over but that was okay

While I've never done it, I'm always worried I'm going to do the opposite: pump and forget to pay. I've never had that problem only because I always enjoy chatting with gas station attendants as many are great, down to earth people who don't mind some company.

I did have my embarrassing moment: one time I forgot to turn the engine off when pumping. Good thing nobody else noticed!

I avoid this by paying with a credit card at the pump. Thankfully my debit card has a MasterCard function to it. I'd drive off all the time if I prepaid cash!

I'm surprised I haven't done this since I have payed for groceries and have walked off several times without then and the clerk had to draw my attention to it both times.Once I left my clothes at the laundry mat and drove six miles before I realized it.This might have to do with my disgust at laundry mats.

It's been quite a while since I paid cash for gas.

I am absentminded, and have forgotten to grab items I've paid for from stores a couple times, left a gas cap at a gas station once, but paying for gas and leaving without doing anything else :) good work.

Don't feel bad about it stuff happens

I worked at a gas station once in the 90s (in the US), before pay first became ubiquitous. People stole gas pretty much every other day.

I try to pay with a debit card as much as possible, if only to avoid the awkward moment of trying to get my clumsy ass hands to wiggle a stack of bills and coins into my wallet, which means dropping coins and receipts probably 80% of the time. This has kept me from driving off without my gas, but I try to walk off without other items all the time. When the last Harry Potter book came out, I made what I think was my first solo drive to pick it up from Wal Mart. I grabbed it from the giant pallet pile they had, marched to the register with nothing else, fumbled awkwardly with cash, and marched off without it. Luckily I didn't get very far. I would have been pissed as hell, if I had genuinely gotten away without it.

I think this is something anyone could do, not just an aspie. I have done it once or twice when my mind was not where it should have been. Heck, I even drove off with the nozzle in the tank once! Luckily it didn't damage anything but my ego (I went back to see what I had done once I realized what had happened.) Needless to say I didn't go back to that gas station for a while after that!

In '89, I filled-up and payed for the fuel, then proceeded to walk back home.

I only lived about 80 yards from the petrol station, and about 30 minutes later I spotted my car, still parked at the pump, from my bedroom window.

It was deeply embarrassing walking back to the car.

On another occasion I walked there with my dog & tied him to a tree while I went inside.

Again I walked back home, without Sam, still tied to the tree. I spotted him a short time later.

No, but I have walked out of the grocery store without taking my groceries with me more times than I am willing to share!

This sounds like something I would do. I wouldn't know as I don't drive and have never filled the gas tank. When I was in driver's training last year, my parents would ask me if I wanted to pump gas. I never could remember how, even after being shown a couple times.
