I'm not obsessed with them (I don't know the routes, or the types of trains) but I really like travelling on them. I get quite excited about getting a train even though I travel that way quite often. I like the repetitive noise the train makes going along the tracks, it is quite soothing.

Hmmm........ here's a question.

Do you feel the same way about the Subway cars?

I was completely bonkers for trains when I was a kid (still like them actually). I had train shirts and model trains and they even used to make my birthday cakes in the shape of trains. I always thought it was just because a railroad passed through a field near our house.

What I think it might be is that the cars proceed very orderly, and cannot ever deviate. They are going to proceed along the track, they can't make a mistake in what direction they might choose, and it is all very predictable.

Yeah I like the track.

When I think of the road I think of constructions zones or potholes or trying to drive through snow.

Compared to trains, the negatives of subways are the people, the lights, and the noises. The positives are the tunnels and the mole people living in the tunnels.

True, the tracks have nearly as much appeal as the trains themselves. There's a certain something to it:

Like seriously, I got to ask. It seems like such a random subject, yet many AS seem so attracted to it.
I knew I used to like trains a lot even though it got less after I turned 11 or something. I still travel with the train with great joy.
Good thing my father was an artist who didn't like to travel by plane. So he took me all over Europe by train, that was so awesome.
Still, it seems like I can't explain why I like trains. Somehow its just fun out of nowhere. It seems like Im the only person in the world who doesn't mind if the train is delayed you know. There got to be a logical reason for this obsession that struck so many AS'sers but I can't find any.

It's a rule. If you have AS, you have to be interested in trains.

Seriously though, trains are not a really big interest of mine. But I did think it was kind of funny when my therapist first asked me what I wanted to be, when I was a child. After thinking about it I said I guess a train engineer. She said, "Oh so you liked trains?" I said "Yeah, I guess so". Her face got real serious, and she turned around and started typing in the computer. I was thinking, why on earth is she typing an entire page about that one little fact.

Was it this one? London to Brighton in 3 and a half minutes it used to be on TV a lot when I was a kid. Its great and a bit like a roller coaster ride, complete with the feeling like you're about to throw up.

No. There is not a subway where I live but I have been on the tube in London. I didn't like the crowding and the lack of personal space. I do quite like trams though, but not if they are too busy.

I know off by heart the whole of the First Capital Connect service maps, most of Southwest Trains and some of a few others. If I get the opportunity to travel on a train, I will take it, and my timetable book will come with me.

Timetables have always been fascinating to me. Here in the US, Amtrak timetables are kind of boring though. Because there are not that many passenger trains left. The schedules are just the basic one train a day, type of thing. But I love to find old historical rail road maps and timetables. From when there were multiple trains a day, and with local and express service, all running together.

As for traveling, trains are OK. I've done it a handful of times. Its way better then flying. But I'd probably rather just drive by myself. Trains are a little too social for me, unless I can afford my own room in a sleeping car. Which I generally can't.

When I was a kid I wanted a toy train, mainly because I thought it would be cool to watch it go around. Now I'd like to have one to take out at Christmas time and put under the tree to have it go around for decoration. It would also drive the dogs crazy!

I rode on a train twice and it was ok. I didn't want to fly, as I'm scared of it. It was like being on a bus without stops to get off. It would have been much better had I gotten a sleeping car.

I did meet Lewis Grizzard while on it. He was drinking straight liqour in the dining car and was pretty drunk. We talked for a few and I got his autograph. I don't remember much about it, I was drunk too. I did meet two girls my age from up North who spent most of the trip asking me to say words for them and giggeling over my accent.

I don't have any particular interest in trains, but they are my favorite form of public transportation, especially when its a quiet train. Just chilling with my music and looking at the scenery as it passes me by with no one near me or bothering me, to be left alone with my thoughts. I've always found it to be relaxing, even if its my regular short route I still enjoy it.

Sleeping car is awesome. I did that one time when I was traveling with my dad. It was even better in the day time. Because my dad spent the time in the lounge car gabbing endlessly, small talk with anybody he could find. So I could close the door and relax by myself in the quiet. It was great.
