Besides your SSI, you should be able to get free health insurance through Medicaid, as well as food stamps and subsidized housing. Don't worry. The government will take care of you, just as they do for the ever increasing millions of Americans who are dependent on taxpayer dollars for their livelihood. You will have so much free time on your hands, so why don't you work under the table? Something that you can do on your own and part-time, if that is your choice You should be able to bring in a couple hundred (or more) dollars per week.
Not that easy at all... For one thing, I'm on SSI and my Medicaid currently isn't going through, which means I'm not able to get medication and my brain's going nuts. I have to send them my bank records. I get food stamps, thankfully; so I don't go hungry. But subsidized housing has a five-year waiting list and everybody else is on the list in front of me. Plus, if I had subsidized housing, my SSI payments would go way down.

If you could "work under the table" you wouldn't be on SSI; you'd be working. I can't imagine a single reason why a person would want to try to live way below the poverty line, spend a huge amount of time in line pleading their case, give up their right to privacy, and generally be considered a lazy bum living on other people's "hard-earned tax money". You have to be desperate. I was about a month away from being homeless when I finally gave up and applied for SSI, and if I had a choice about it, I'd stay far away from it. Oh, sure, you have a lot of free time; but you have no money. So you're basically sitting at home, staring at the wall. That's it.

Sadly I think Cavendish's views are not uncommon (if he isn't trolling) i had my family turn on me when i got put on a pension (thankfully I'm nearly about to get of it) :) and that did not help one iota being accused of being a bum living the high life spending my lazy days suning myself on Aussie beaches (their in Switzerland )

My GP saw the effect it had on me , lets just hope the OP doesn't have family members with such strange views on life.

The Washington , D.C area is one of the few places in the country where the economy is booming ,so you should be able to manage, perhaps not as well as you would desire, but surely much better than a lot of working folks beyond the Beltway. You've got your diagnosis, and now you have your government benefits rolling in, so just relax and enjoy your life.

Not to mention I have a massive underpayment (over 2,700 dollars) on top of the $624 dollars per month I get from Social Security due to the fact that I have not worked in over a year.

Now the reason I get SSI in the past and currently is because of my autism, which mostly prevents me from getting any long-term employment.

The real problem is using the money, I want to find someplace to live in DC and managing my money for the long term.

In general I respect peoples rights to disagree but here you have an example of a user asking for help/advice from other users with a reply from this POS implying that Jkid (and everyone else on this forum who applies for SSI/SSDI) is committing fraud. He goes further, suggesting to Jkid, in detail that he should commit other acts of fraud. How many posts will this clown write before it is realized that he serves no purpose on this forum other than to demean and antagonize the people who use this forum for legitimate reason? Is it not clear yet that, after 71 posts repeating the same thing about the same subject, this person is not here for good intentions? Hasn't it become clear that his replies only cause emotional distress to legitimate users of this forum and he offers nothing constructive in any way? Has he crossed the line by suggesting that other people here should commit criminal acts or do we have to continue to suffer this fool?

Why would I even come here, if I didn't have a sincere desire to help others free themselves from dependency from government, and become the best that they can be.

Well talking crap about people on or applying for welfare is not a very good way to do that...now is it?

I think Cavendish should be a parody writer for the next GTA game, , not 5 that's coming out soon :D perhaps # 6?

They cracked me up with their Republican space rangers TV show.

Being so dependent on the government allows me plenty of time to indulge in my unproductive hobby

The question is why would you stay here knowing that these people don't want your advice, they don't like you, and would be happier if you disappeared? You know nothing about the people here and you think you know what's best for them. You can talk to the finger because not even the hand is listening to you now. Let me give you some advice that will help you, gtfo and go spam your congress man about the lazy autistic leaches that are draining your tax dollars.

I can't speak for anyone else, but what you've written so far is pure rubbish. Not helpful at all to anyone who wants to "free themselves from dependency [on] government and become the best they can be."

You also have an unrealistically rosy perspective on what it's like to live on government benefits. Here are two words: "Mandatory poverty." If you're fortunate enough to have an actual work history, you can get on SSDI and get more money based on your income over the past seven years as well as increased leeway in terms of other sources of income. People on SSI, however, have fairly rigid and extreme restrictions placed on them with regards to finances. I mean stuff like not being allowed to have more than $2000 in savings and subtracting any additional income they make directly from their SSI payments. As in, winning a $100 lottery ticket means that your income is $100 lower for that month. The actual monthly payments are well below the poverty level and your income is based on things like how much rent you pay and who you live with. While the upper limit for monthly payments is close to $700/month, Callista pointed out subsidized housing can reduce your monthly payment.

People don't apply for SSI to get a free ride. They usually do it so they can have clothes and food and a place to live. Some people have spent decades trying to function in the workforce before trying to get disability benefits because they're simply not able to function in the workforce. For most people on disability, it's not a matter of "be dependent on the government or be the best you can be." Often it's a matter of "be dependent on the government or be homeless and hungry."

As many times as this has been explained to him in different ways you think one more time is going to change his mind? He claims to be here for the good of the people. You still buy that crap? He's here because he hates you and people like you. He thinks you are lazy and a worthless leach. If you were starving on the street he would spit on you before he offers you a meal. Is it that hard to understand what this person represents even though he tells you he's only doing it for the best intentions? What is the point in explaining your reality to him when he thinks you're less than human.

Based on his comments can you not deduce how he sees us? I think his language is pretty clear.

I am supposed to deduce an entire worldview from his comments?

I can see he says negative things about government support, but how am I supposed to extend that to "he sees us as worthless leeches?"

I don't disagree with your assessment, which seems logical, but when you ask "Can't you see this?" My answer is in the vicinity of "not without help."

Who cares what he thinks, it has nothing to do with finding solutions, so whatever he is thinking is as irrelevant as his comments.

Sometimes it's better to not care what someone online thinks because then you will stress yourself out defending yourself and others and then you can't stop thinking about it. It's just too stressful. I find it better to not care what people think or else you will be living a stressful life.
