I couldn't live without an imaginary world to live in. It's the only place I feel like I belong. There isn't any place for the real me in the real world. Everyone who thinks he "knows" me knows only what he wants of me--loyal, long-suffering wife; patient, firm, but gentle mother; hard working, dedicated co-worker (some of them even believe I'm as much a flag-waving jingoist as they are).

When I was a kid I would go there all the time. It was always related to my interest of the moment, whether thundercats, elf quest. the hobbit or start trek. Now that I'm an adult I only go there when things are bad. Generally things are good. I don't have a stellar social life, but I do have two kids and I love them and have something with them that I've never had anywhere else. So I find myself thinking of them when I need to go somewhere else for a bit. They're my new fantasy world :) When they get older, I expect I'll return to the shire, lol.

I always think I'm in my imaginary world. Before I go to sleep, I think of how my day was there, which I use for my writing. I have quite a few kitties as pets, as well as a dog, and I and a group of other environmentalists go around planting trees, cleaning up oil spills, and stopping poachers. The one with the poachers, I usually like to take away their guns and stuff and let them try to kill the animals that way. Evening out the odds, we'll see who'll win.

More than one, actually. I visit them at different times. The main one? Being an alien that crashed on Earth & is stranded here.
Older ones similar, but I used to try to build entire worlds. One was me & several people actually operating robotic dinosaurs (they are lifelike outside) to fool the public..

Sincerely,
Matthew

Not so much now, but when I was a kid I had created an entire imaginary metropolitan area (fitting given my special interests revolved largely around cities), albeit with ties to the real world. It lives on via SimCity, though. :D

Contrary to how most people's imaginary worlds seem to function, I am not present in it; rather, it is a story, one which I keep changing, and I simply observe events or play out different characters' roles.

I find it embarrassing to talk about it much, and I keep changing it anyway, so I won't say anymore.

I have had different fantasy worlds I was a part of. Some of them were just like E-FrameZenderblast described. In those ones I wasn't part of it, I was just the author, scripting the whole thing and planning what would happen to the imaginary characters.

I have had some fantasy worlds where I was a part of it, except I was a very different person than I really am. In one that I did, I was one of the rebels from Half Life 2, and in that fantasy world, I was far more social, I was always able to speak my mind when I wanted to, and all the imaginary people of that fantasy world liked me.

Unfortunately I always lose interest in my fantasy worlds and eventually, I try to end it and then after a while, I start a new one. When I lost interest in the fantasy of me being a rebel from the game Half Life 2, I decided it needed an ending, so I had myself die. Poor imaginary characters. They were all so sad...

The first 15 years of my life was spend almost entirely (all day everyday- even at school) in my fantasy worlds dangling a string in front of my face....so when people used to say that I was "in my own little world" that was literally accurate. My fantasy worlds revolved around what I was interested in/preoccupied with at the time........which for the most part was pretty mainstream. For example, pretending I was a professional gymnast competing and performing , and of course talking to my imaginary gymnast friends (who weren't quite as good as me..of course). Sometimes I would replay what happened to me on the schoolyard in real life but give it a good ending.....with me not being bullied or humiliated ..........or I would pretend to be one of the other kids(there were certain girls I idolized and would pretend to be). At another point I would pretend to be characters in the books I read.. Now I read fantasy books all the time (which my mom says has replaced my fantasy world). I do have a fantasy world though (which changes somewhat based on my interests/the books I read , I just spend less time in it so I can participate somewhat in the real world. My new imaginary world is based on the Harry Potter world and the world in the Micheal Scott series "the secrets of the immortal Nicholas Flamel". Things in my world also have to "make sense" while still being fiction/fantasy in the sense that there can't be any inconsistencies in my worlds.....if there is one then it must be worked out. I get really exited about my adventures in my imaginary world...I can't think about them at night or I won't sleep and I sometimes actually run and jump around my room while in my world. The only times I haven't had imaginary worlds (or have spent very very little time in one) has been when I've been clinically depressed.

I have a few imaginary worlds, but only one is really detailed. I visit my imaginary worlds when I need to escape from this one.

Honestly it sounds like people are fantasizing about heaven in this thread, I'd say most people engage in this sort of heavy day-dreaming on steroids, and I think movies tend to emphasize the sort of excitement humans yearn for but are unable to acquire when we're restricted to mundane lives, to compensate, we watch movies, we read books, and then we think about "what if" and then "if only"...Then we find peace through religion because the religion instills faith that you will have this thing one day.

You can't have it in this world, it's physically and mentally impossible to live in that sort of excitement, but maybe that's why religion is actually fairly important, because it makes that one little thing accessible in the next life.
